Southwest #27 Karen's Desert Sun

Type of Home: Condo

What inspired you to use color? The desert sun - it's brutal and blinding and leaves giant color halos on my lids when I close my eyes. When I bought the place, I had grand plans for pristine, all-white spaces, but through the years, the color just kinda seeped in.

Color Tip: Color is nice, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s nice to think that it can change mood and define a personality, but that’s just passing the blame or the chance to define things for yourself. I think that at different points in our lives, we all plod around preferring one color or another. It's just as likely for a neutral-lover to be creative and bold as it is for a trendy bright one to be dull and boring. And…you can’t expect a fundamentally miserable person to chipper-up in a yellow room. If you're itching to see which colors to bring home, just pick what you like and start focusing on the intake...take some scenic hikes, eat delicious foods, fall in love, drink lots and lots of wine, travel. Eventually, you'll have to spit out whatever you absorb. And, there's nothing like sucking the marrow out of life to get a good sense of scale, proportion and color.

Colors Used: Sherwin Williams paints.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

I agree, the ceiling is fantastic. And I really like the green floor in the bedroom. I can't tell if its carpet or painted, but I think its a nice way to use color on the floor.

Beautiful! The colors pop and each room, even from the tiniest details in the artwork.

That is the second time in a week a painted floor (the other one was plywood) has grabbed my attention. Oh, the power of a smartly chosen shade of paint. :)

What an idyllic home! The little splashes of color really make the living space pop. I need to learn to be brave with color :)
