What inspired you to use color? I just bought my first house and this is what I've done so far (my living room actually is still empty, haha). I'm inspired by bold prints and graphics, contrasting colors and everyday objects -- I designed my guest bedroom around the colors in bamboo and my loft around a cool vase, etc. Since I'm always on a budget, if I can't afford to buy what I like then I'll make it myself instead (I made all the artwork and the headboards myself). This helps me to save money AND give my spaces a custom and colorful look.
Color Tip: If you can't paint your walls, use bold accessories and artwork to add color to your space, and be creative -- for instance, fill a glass vase with fruit or seashells or pretty rocks instead of flowers. Also, if you want to use different colors without your place looking like a circus, use certain finishes and colors as neutrals to balance your colors - I use black, white, grey, glass, and chrome in each space to do this. Finally, add a houseplant! It'll brighten any space and give it life.
Colors Used: Sherwin Williams: Lime Rickey, Overt Green, Gecko (Guest Bedroom) and Real Red (Dining and Master Bedroom). Behr: Summer Citrus (Loft) and Irish Mist (Kitchen)
Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------
Welcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...
1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide
The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.
2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop
Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.
Best, Maxwell

I love it! I love seeing not just use of color, but graphic elements, accent walls. The green of the bedroom looks so restful, and I love the bold red of the dining area and orange is my favorite color. Love the stripes. Cool place!

These rooms are amazing! She should win this contest by a landslide! She has done creative, innovative design on a showstring budget that any homeowner would embrace. All the colors are fun, exciting, a little edgy and sophisticated. I believe she will have very exciting ideas for all the other rooms in her new home as well!

Sorry, I'm not a fan of the results, but you deserve much respect for the hard work you put into it!

I am so inspired by your beautiful color choices, modern touches and especially the exciting little media room. You made all the rooms fun and loaded with your personality. Obviously you took tremendous time and effort to pull this off. I am so impressed!!

This is way too fussy for my taste. It seems to be indicative of so many readers obsession with STUFF. A throw, with a tray, with a candle and a bowl of fruit at the foot of the bed? Really? I'm more interested in seeing effortless, livable interiors, versus contrived, themey rooms.
The living room wouldn't still be empty (haha) if one third of the stuff came out of each of the other rooms and resided there.

Your new home is cheery and chic. Its bold use of color reflects a vitality that we in the northeast sometimes don't dare to use! Most of all, I appreciate your budgetary concerns. Everyone right now has to think about creating on their own and sticking to a budget. Great job!

Great job! I love the use of color, especially the orange which isn't a popular wall color, and how you made it look sharp and edgy. The stripes there and in the bedroom are a unique touch as well, and it's clear you put a lot of work into it! I don't think there is too much 'stuff' either, the artwork and decorations add a great touch and make it look more sophisticated, even on a budget. Your rooms are the best I've seen on the site, good luck!

Like the choice of orange, but I gotta agree with Fledgling Aesthete - too much stuff and a little too much pattern. I'd work more on the color relationships in areas like the livingroom. The orange is bold, but the couch is SO heavy and dark...and still doesnt relate to the wall color.
The bedroom is a good example of color relationships that work - the greens in the throwrug and the wall, the neutral wall to wall brings our focus to the crisp white of the bedding, with just a few perfect blips of orange for contrast. You could lose the throw/traw mess at the end of the bed and this would still look amazing. Bring these kinds of relationships to the rest of the house and it will be amazing!

I LOVE the bold green and orange! Such a well styled home with tasteful, yet youthful elements. As reflected by others commenting, the budgetary restrictions are not noticable, but appreciated. This is a beautiful, stylish, and modern home.

I like the dining room - very nicely put together, and your bold color choices.
I don't like the thematic styling of the bedrooms and staging throughout though.
