Southwest #4: Alejandra's Baja Exuberance

100108Alejandra01.jpg

fallcolors4.jpgName: Alejandra
Location: Baja California (near Ensenada)
Type of Home: House

What inspired you to use color? Growing up in Southern California was to grow up surrounded by exuberant color. the proximity to Mexico & my South American background are some of the factors that influence my use of color, which has always played a part in my homes. As an architect and designer I see the use of color as an integral aspect of any project. And I suppose, color makes me happy, to see a room change with the play of light, to see it glow, is almost a childlike joy. Here the colors were dictated by the colored glass windows & a simple striped bag. Once one wall was done, it infected the rest of the house, even to the dining table outside.

Color Tip: Don't be meek with color. Start with one bold wall, because the truth is you can always paint over it, but if you don't try you'll never know what you really love.

Colors Used: None given

There's nothing in the world that I wish more than being able to see the sea from home... Right now we see a little strip of it over the rest of the city where we live...
This is my dream home

I think this may be my favorite so far. It's got such an easy-going vibe! I don't know if I would like the colors anywhere else, but here they somehow seem to work. Beautiful, colorful windows and that view... ahhh!

Spectacular! Now THAT is color! While it wouldn't work in every home, it works so well here. And the views! Oh, the views. I'll be on your doorstep...say, Tuesday? Cool.

Not my typical style, but I would love to know (and visit) the person who lives here. It's so cheery but at the same time soothing. I love the colored glass.

I second hanako66's comment. Your staircase looks straight out of a magazine! Awesome!

What does the upstairs look like?

I love it when people don't try and fit any current moulds. I would do things a bit differently to suit my tastes but I LOVE the fact they dare to use colour ! Good on you - this is awesome. And like other people said, it is a happy cheery home. =) I bet the people who did this home fit those characteristics too.

I will echo some of the other comments and say that I don't think you could get away with these colors anywhere else...but here they do wonders. Maybe its the fact that a big open space is just outside that makes it possible to have so much going on indoors.

bravo on your exhuberent and lively choices. This entry makes me want to BE there, like, every day.

Now this is a beach house! I'm not lovin the stripes on the stairs because it drowns out the great lime green on the risers, but this is one of the best entries so far!

OK, first I must admit I've spent time in this home. It is spectacular, seemingly surfing on the edge of the world. And knowing Alejandra is back in Bali right now, I'll respond for her about the upstairs.
Upstairs is the complete opposite of downstairs-- a huge bed, everything completely white, mirrors, windows, so it feel like you're floating in the ocean.
One part you're not seeing is the lush landscaping, both up the hillside and down to the sea. That lushness, the colors, the textures and the sound of the sea combine to make this home the most peaceful sanctuary I know. Oh and it's known as the Pink House, since the outside is indeed Pink (with a fantastic cerulean blue trim).

I think it's a beautiful entry, however, technically "Baja California" is a state in Mexico. That qualifies as outside the US, and should be posted in the International category.

I really like the windows, the stairs, the view, the pink exterior (thanks for confirming what I thought it looked like, Dahlush). Some of the flat solids on the interior just don't hit it for me. I wish they were different than they are. Slightly more or less yellow or green, lighter, I don't know, they are just off by a little for an effect.

for alejandra's Baja exuberance Entry No 4 Southwest color.

I have also been so fortunate to be there.

The magic captured by the lens is quite so.

Imagine what the beholder feels when present to the

majestic beauty of the sea and the exuberance of color

that Alejandra uses so freely for her own response...

I've also been blessed to spend time in this AMAZING environment. Photos can't quite capture the rapture you feel when you enter. The colors are the perfect complement to the expanse of sea and sky visible from three huge picture windows, as if on the prow of a ship that is still. The colors are the exact shade of the pains of colored glass surrounding the west windows. They do not overwhelm, but enhance the magnificence of the surrounding sea. Just imagine the constant lullaby of the waves, the soft sound of pelicans floating by just at eye level, the seagull calls, all the while being enveloped in the womb of joyful colors. Incidently, the upstairs is not just white and mirroirs, but a solid wall of chartreuse opposite the windows to the sea and a floor of turquoise!

What a feast for the eyes and soul this place is. I have had the pleasure to see the Balinese home of this talented Architect/Designer and I am in Awe of her talents with colours and textures.
This is truelly a place I intend to see in this lifetime.
Soulfully special!
