When we spied the Herb Savor by Prepara at eco-friendly A+R in Silverlake, we instantly squealed, "Yes! Now we will never have to throw out fresh basil!" And then we thought, "This neato design totally looks like something in The Fifth Element."
This slick device works so well that we're pissed we didn't come up with it: fill the base with water, stick fresh herbs in a stainless steel basket, stand basket up and let herb stems hang out in the water. Do you know how long you'll have these herbs? THREE WEEKS!

I have a less slick looking version of this. Be forewarned, you must change the water often (at least daily) or you're left with some sort of stinky primordial sludge instead of fresh herbs in no time.

$34 for a gizmo that looks like it's made of plastic (not green, I'd say)? You know, you can do the same thing with a tea/coffee mug, too.

If you don't want to fork out $34, you can do the same thing by putting your herbs in a glass jar of water and placing them in the fridge. I do this all the time. It pretties up the fridge, and makes the herbs very accessible. The idea of a cover over the herbs had never occurred to me, but I am wondering if maybe a glass dome of some sort would work.

I've done the same thing (using a tall drinking glass or a vase), and covered my herbs with a plastic produce bag. I'm not sure about extending their life for three weeks, and yes, you do have to change the water frequently.
