If you're a fan of Alexander Calder, starting saving your pennies! We blogged awhile back about these Calder-esque mini-mobiles for the home, and now we're drooling over these wall tapestries designed by Calder himself.
If you're a fan of Alexander Calder, starting saving your pennies! We blogged awhile back about these Calder-esque mini-mobiles for the home, and now we're drooling over these wall tapestries designed by Calder himself.
Working with master craftsman weavers in Central America, Calder originally intended that these tapestries would actually be hammocks for a series of hammock stands that he had designed. However, the hammocks took on a life of their own to become their own art pieces.
Only fourteen designs were re-created and woven into two sizes and in an edition of 100. The large measures 72"x98" and costs about $6,500 at Maximo Design.
Ahhh Calder. :)
His wire sculptures are my favorite... especially the elephants.

If you want to find a Calder cheap, there's a large mobile hanging in the Marcel Breuer-designed library a few blocks away from me. The city is deciding whether or not to tear down the historic structure. If it goes, so will the Calder.
The keep up with the details, see the library's seldom updated blog. Here's the link:

Grosse Pointe wants to tear down a Breuer building?!?
That's insanity!

That's ridiculous if they tear it down! GP can afford to renovate if that's the issue! The National AIA is touring it because it's a architectural landmark...
