There was an awful lot of really bad trompe l'oeil in the 90's when "sponge painting" and faux finishing was all the DIY rage.

I am so with you on the ugliness of most DIY trompe l'oeil and faux painting. How many fake plaster walls with a hint of brick peeking through or grape vines twining round the kitchen cabinets can one human deal with? However, I think this trompe l'oeil is rockin' and makes a positive impact.
