Is It Right to Hang a Whale?
Melbourne

082708art01.jpgAfter 6 months of being married we’ve finally become real people- we’ve bought art! But now we have a problem, we have wall space aplenty but how can we hang one smallish frame in a space that we intend to let grow organically?

There have been a couple of reasons why we’ve held off from buying and putting up art. Our walls were covered in holes from picture hooks and after 6 months of patching and painting there was no way in hell that we were putting one unnecessary hole into all that hard work! We were also really hesitant to purchase any works just because we needed something to fill the space. So we chose to wait with our naked walls, get comfortable with them and then go shopping. We had gone to see Beci Orpin’s recent expo and while we were there came across Lab Partners and purchased Whale Tale Print. Do you think we should put it up now or wait until we’ve collected a few more pieces to make it seem a bit more balanced?

3M Command hooks might be a good interim way to hang what you have and still be able to add more without the trouble of extra holes.

Decorating is a process :)

You don't have to wait until you own enough art to open a small gallery to start hanging things on the wall. Besides, as your collection grows you will probably find that certain pieces might look better somewhere other than where you originally intended. If you love the whale and you think you know where you want to hang it, hang it!

I'd love to know where your floating drawers/shelves came from - they look amazing!
Also, love that whale painting - great find!

I want to try those command hooks too, I always tend to make a million holes when hanging stuff. And measuring makes no difference!

I kinda like the way it's sitting on the console right now - I'd wait to get more.

if you intend to have a collection grow organically on that wall then you should hang the piece, and keep adding pieces as you collect. it isn't organic development if you collect a bunch of pieces and then plan where each will go.

You are only recently real people, so it is understandable that you would ask for instructions about when to hang a picture. Good luck.

the 3m hooks work great. used them in dorms on concrete walls and in some apartments that I didn't want to put a whole in the wall for. with they were a little cheaper though, since i really like them but it gets pricey compared to a nail...

At this point, with the size of the print, it almost makes sense to just keep it right where it is. Looks nice on that set of hanging drawers.

Have you ever had the 3M hooks fall down? It worries us when the back of the packet says "DO NOT use for antiques, heirlooms or other valuable or irreplaceable items".

nosestuckinabook- Husband built the draw unit. He's so handy!
