Look! Eva Zeisel: Extraordinairy Designer at 100

evazeisel_1.jpgThis past weekend while vacationing in San Diego for some well deserved rest and relaxation, we serendipitously walked into a most memorable design exhibit at the Mingei International Museum that we highly recommend: Eva Zeisel: Extraordinairy Designer at 100

The name Eva Zeisel might not be an instantly recognizable one, but there's a very good chance you'll recognize something from the portfolio of one of the most important industrial designers of the 20th century, with a career that spans an age-defying 75 years. Zeisel has designed Sears, the Museum of Modern Art in New York Hall China, Red Wing China, Castleton China, Norleans Meito (Japan), Western Stoneware, Hyalyn, Phillip Rosenthal (Germany), Mancioli (Italy), Federal Glass, Heisey Glass, Noritake (Japan), Nikkon Toki (Japan), KleinReid, and some of you might remember the recent Crate & Barrel "Classic Century" reissue of her 1952 china collection.

The zest for life and a pursuit for beauty is not only evident in her forever relevant-contemporary work realized in ceramics, glass, wood and metal, but also by her charming personality that is wonderfully exhibited during a documentary that accompanies the Mingei museum's show honouring Zeisel's centennial. How could you not just adore a woman who was once quoted saying, "I do curves because I'm curvy -- meaning I am a little bit fat."
