Photo LA 2008: Inspiration

010908_laura.jpg

We'll admit, we've never bought anything at Photo LA, but that doesn't mean we've left empty handed either. We use the weekend-long event to get inspiration (to fill the well, if you will) for our own projects, pinpoint palettes we love and dream of the perfect above-the-credenza photo. Last year we died over Laura Letinsky's evocative still lives from her "Breakfast and Melancholia" series.

We love the subdued palette with pretty pops of color, the carefully messed arrangement and the beauty of, well, a mess. She's a woman after our own hearts.

And we wonder what we'll be inspired by this year. The whole event is even bigger this year and has relocated to Barker Hanger (home of our guilty pleasure: the Barney's Warehouse Sale) at the Santa Monica Airport. We're definitely looking forward to local gallery Craig Krull and artist Wendy Burton's broken down interiors with beautiful lighting:

Craig Krull also represents Julius Schulman and Michael Light. (Don't miss Julius Schulman's artist conversation brought to us by LACMA.)

We're also hoping that the Wall Space gallery from Seattle will bring some of Joelle Jensen's prints of mundane interiors:

Check out the full list of Exhibitors and all the details of the weekend. The opening is this thursday and the fair goes all weekend.

I'm not in LA, but my favorite photography gallery -- Paul Kopeikin -- is in LA. He has a really good eye for emerging photographers and will do bridal/housewarming registries.

the show was disappointing and kinda boring... :( i've been to the nyc version and it was a little better. artLA starts 1/25, so hopefully that'll be more inspiring.
