Spin Mobiles capture
"the essence of both mid-century and contemporary living".The mobiles are handmade with wood grain or formica, and are individually hand strung and balanced, so they come to you ready to hang. They start at $215 (for the single strands) and go up to $298 for the larger ones.
You know, looking at these mobiles, I can't help but feel that the creator is trying to take advantage of the "midcentury modern" name.
When you look at mobiles by people like Calder, there was something simple, clean, and elegant about his designs.
This creator seems to throw the entire kitchen sink into these mobiles. They just seem kind of obnoxious and overdone to me personally.
You know I really feel it's unfair if someone goes straight to Calder to compare mobiles, unless you're planning on putting an installation into a museum or spend well over a couple hundred bucks for one.
And I didn't realize "midcentury modern" was sacred and not to be taking advantage of the name. Part of midcentury modern's appeal is it can be fun and playful.
Besides marketing is all about taking advantage of what sells.
It's totally cool if they don't work for you. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
Personally I find the dots mobile rather fun. But then I do have an appreciation for things that are obnoxious and overdone...it appeals to the kid in me I guess.
I was going to ask if anyone knew of any classes that dealt with mobile design in Los Angeles, as it would probably be a hoot to do. But I'd hate to have to live up to the work of Calder.
So adam, you must be an artist. The way you can throw cliche names like Calder into a comment about mobiles. Lot's of thought went into that, I'm sure...
Gotta say, reading your post made me laugh, thanks!
Think I may buy one of the obnoxious overdone ones myself.
