The Gallery: Amy Bennett

Artist Amy Bennett is fascinated with suburban landscapes and narratives that explore the "awkwardness of a group of people trying to coexist and relate to one another, the fragility of relationships, and the uncertainty and anxiety of growing up." And we're fascinated with her process of constructing 1:87 scale miniature railroad models as reference for detailed oil paintings of various sizes that evoke a David Lynchian investigation of the hidden dramas that lie hidden behind the fences and facade of suburban living.

With minute detail and the surreal viewing angles revealed by the use of miniature models, Bennett's paintings give intimate glances of the interior lives that unfurl inside every home, in every neighborhood, ranging from the relaxing comfort of enjoying a patch of sun to a bleak emotional breakdown in a backyard pool. And in this case, it's okay to be a nosy Nellie neighbor, so appease your peeping Tom/Tina desires at Amy Bennett's show, Neighbors, exhibiting at the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica until February 10.

I went to the opening Saturday night and every single piece had already sold. There were 5 other opening at Bergamot this past weekend so lots of great new art to see there. This was a great show and you should totally make it if you can.

I wish I could get out to LA while this exhibt is showing. I like these.

These paintings also remind of The Sims game. I mean that in a positive way - fun!
