The Gallery: Ian Hundley Quilts

021207ianhundley.jpg

The traditional stereotype of quilt making usually conjures up images of grandmothers and housewives, but Ian Hundley is radically breaking that notion. AT:Chicago slinked him last March, but we were reminded again of his amazing work in the current Surface Magazine.

Ian Hundley draws inspiration from aerial land photography and topographical maps. He makes the quilts from hundreds of pieces of fabric that he takes from his own clothes or ones donated by his friends. He says, "I realized that a map is like a piece of clothing. There is a pattern there. A map is a pattern. It just clicked." Cool Hunting has a fascinating video of a studio visit they did with him last spring. Click here to view.

With all due respect to Ian Hundley, Jonathan, the stereotypical image of quilting was long ago broken by the premier textile artist/quilter Michael James... click on my name for a link to his work, I advise perusing both the Portfolio and Archive links, his use of color and line are spectacular. I had an opportunity to study color with Michael about ten years ago and still, today, find lessons from his class relevant and inspiring.

You are AMAZINGLY behind the times when it come to contemporary quilts and fabric art if you think these guys are cutting edge.

Deb, I was simply responding to the reference to male vs. the stereotypical image of a quilter (grandmotherly). I'm well aware of who the cutting edges quilters and art quilters are (but that wasn't the point here).
