The MidCentury Art of Kelly Reemtsen

MidCentury might very well be a trend in other parts of the country, but here in California it's just one of our own classic design motifs that has an everlasting appeal to many of our residents, whether young or old (we're always amused with debates about whether MCM is out of style or not). Artist Kelly Reemtsen's paintings captures the blend of modernity and memory of the Californian decor style with her paintings of MCM furnishings and figures, leaving the viewer unsure whether they're captured from moments of the past or of the present. Kelly Reemtsen delights in the every day imagery that surrounds her. Her paintings, while decidingly contemporary in style, bring us back to eras past. Her home is infused with these model objects- furniture, flat ware, dresses and vespas. These objects that comprise her vast repertoire of imagery are derived from Kelly’s second most favored hobby, collecting. Said to be a “self-described archivist and collector of American design and lifestyle” Kelly’s collection ranges from the 50’s, 60’s to 70’s functional objects and décor.
