AT Asia: Minimalist Modern Japan

atla051408HOUSEkn.jpgWow, I thought my minimalist modern tendencies had faded away since my days in college studying to become an architect (perhaps architects prefer minimalist designs so as to eliminate drafting production work). But then every once in awhile I see a residential structure like this and I think I might be able to live in a concrete box...

The big box, known as the House kn, is located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan and designed by Kazuyasu Kochi and Mana Kochi of Kochi Architect's Studio. Also below is their Shinkawasaki Infill condominium, which has a stunning white washed interior space with a most curious crawl space only reachable by ladder. More of their residential projects here.

This works for me. I've ALWAYS loved minimalist, white and black.

Ah, yes, imaginary homes by architects. I love these. It's like looking at art. It's not real, but it looks great.

No one actually lives in a space like this in Japan. It looks a lot like the kind of "model homes" they put up to show off future condominiums. They make a building which they show off for several months then tear down once they've sold enough units. It's immensely wasteful, but does sell people on the notion that they can buy into some pristine and tasteful space which will in no way match the real experience of living in the place.

Yeah - not so much. To provide a minimalist detail, an architect usually has to spend MORE time drafting (as I sit here drawing a minimalist detail).
Oh the irony.

"...perhaps architects prefer minimalist designs so as to eliminate drafting production work."

Sure, sure. Those lazy minimalists are always taking the easy road by deconstructing complexity to expose the fundamental and the essential... the good-for-nothing bums.
Why can't they recognize that 'more is better' and just add more stuff -- like thoughful, intelligent hard-working architects do?
;)
