Look! Apartments for Motorcycle Enthusiasts in Tokyo

042108atlaasia01.jpgThe NE Apartments in Tokyo were designed with one type of tenant in mind: motorcycle riders. The building is C-shaped with center a courtyard to allow motorcyclists to enter and leave with ease from their motorcycle-sized garages...

042108atlaasia03.jpgThe resulting concrete former space is austere, modern and impressive, with an aesthetic that comes off a bit penitentiary on first glance (straight out of Michael Bay's The Island) . But the interior curvilinear walls and warm hued flooring reminds visitors that the NE Apartments not only house machinery, but also the riders who call the space home, while also tackling the limited parking problems inherent while living in Tokyo.

Totally cool. If only this were in the U.S. Would have saved me a lot of work :)

Good... I hope these a$$holes know what it's like having to live with each others motorcycle noise at all hours of the night.

Awesome. I've stored my R6 in my loft during winters but getting it up and down is a pain.

Conceptually, these things always look very impressive, but, living in them is another issue entirely. You are so close to your neighbors, you can look in each other's windows. The apartments are very dark and small. When you see it as a mock-up or empty of human occupation, it looks austere and cool, but fill these spaces up and it's going to be cramped, cluttered, and unimpressive.

This is mainly a solution to the problem of parking anywhere in Tokyo where tagging vehicles with parking tickets is overzealous at best as it was privatized last year and you can't part anywhere for even a short time without being tagged. I couldn't find any prices, but I'd wager that these places are plenty expensive.

Interesting idea...

I am more interested in the odd shape of the building. The same shape as one large house with 2 storey's and possibly a green courtyard garage outdoor entertainment area on the ground floor would be nice.

Also you have to keep in mind in a lot of Tokyo homes you CAN see into your neighbours windows anyway and they are often just this small and lightless.

Interesting idea. Got to be for singles. Guys. Because only a single guy would think it was a good idea to put the toilet and bathtub and washer in the same room as the motorcycle is parked.

And I sure wouldn't want my sweetheart coming home while I was having a long, delicious soak in the tub, and him flinging open the double doors and roaring his motorcycle up next to the tub.

On the other hand, I can see it working very well (if there was a separate room for the bath) for bicyclists. Sort of an environmental set up, using less space (exhibiting all the goodies of a Small Cool entry).

Go look at this page:

Can you see how cool it would be to have the curving area of the homes above, slightly larger, incorporating the tiers of plantings?

So that the bottom level is largest, with the parking garage, and the bath. Above it, would be a curving planter, that could be filled with vegetables. Or something really neat might be "walls" of bamboo. Live, planted bamboo.

And on that third story, beneath it's windows (it's smaller than the second, and the second smaller than the first) would be another bamboo wall.

Then around the outside of the complex, a wall of bamboo.

It certainly would create the privacy that people are talking about, while giving the feeling of living in a forest or in the treetops.

The outside could be tiered too, with planters again.

Ground floor interiors in acid stain, including the courtyard, entry area for the bikes, there are many colors, this is aqua:

Yes, it works on walls, interior and exterior too:

As it is, it's kind of neat, the apartments above. But I just can't handle the toilet-in-the-middle-of-a-parking-garage feeling.

I'd rather use Imagine Tile in the Asphalt and assorted street-themed tiles to give the impression of a toilet in the middle of the road, without actually BEING in the middle of a road:

Wow. I want an apartment like the second one from the top. How sweet would it be to just pull in your motorcycle, fold the laundry, and then head upstairs for a snack.

I would love to admire my Buell motorcycle from the comfort of my lazy boy. Check out this sick community that I belong to. I will show this article to others on the forum.
