5 Bedroom Tips From Hotels and B&B's
Austin

011609bbtip-01.jpg Don't you love how extra rested and revived you feel after vacationing in nice hotels and bed and breakfasts? More time to relax isn't the only reason for the restfulness; gorgeous and comfortable design plays a big part, too. Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts spend a lot of time working on the feel and appearance of their guest rooms, and we bet implementing some of their design ideas into your own bedroom could help you create a restful retreat at home. More after the jump...

  • Keep it simple This is a no-brainer: keep the clutter out of the bedroom. No mini-home office in one corner, no boxes of junk under the bed. If you have to store things in your room, do it as organized and concealed as possible. No one wants stacks of to-do-lists and junk staring them down while they're trying to fall asleep.

  • Keep it techology-free Exceptions of course for reading lamps and alarm clocks, try to keep the TVs, laptops and cell phones out of the bedroom when possible. Make your bedroom for resting and sleeping and the relaxation will soon follow.

  • Make it comfortable Even if you like modern, minimal design, try to add those elements of comfort to the room. Whether it be with extra comforters tucked away or a nice rug underfoot, bedrooms were made for lounging.

  • Make it convenient Maybe a mini-bar in your bedroom is going a bit overboard, but consider making a dedicated area for drinks or snacks, and make sure you have everything in your room that you'll need to relax before you retire for the evening. Isn't it just the worse when you get all snuggled in bed only to realize you forgot your glass of water?

  • Be your own turn-down service You might not always have the time, but making your bed in the morning and even including a little treat on your pillow could be the very thing that gets you excited about going to bed each night. Besides, isn't it so much better to slide into a comfortable, made bed?

What are your favorite things to implement to make your bedroom as comfortable as a hotel room or bed and breakfast? Let us know!

Definitely agree about keeping technology out of the bedroom, especially TVs. Bedrooms should be for two things. Since I ditched having a TV in the bedroom a few years ago, my sleep has never been better.

Also, splurge on a great mattress and bedding. You spend most of your life in bed, and good night's sleep impacts every single area of your life, from health to job performance. This is not the time to be stingy. (This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to buy the most expensive mattress in the store to get the best one for you.)

I think having someone else make your bed is the relaxing part.

Yes, and cleaning the bathroom everyday.

I totally agree about the mattress and bedding. It might cost a bit much at the time of purchase, but considering you use both things on a daily basis (sometimes more than once!), it's definitely worth the splurge.

Also, good pillows is something worth having as well. And by 'good' I don't mean uber expensive ones. I mean nice feather ones that you like. Sinking into those is definitely one of my favorite moments every night.

BTW, the Times had a great article about green mattresses and offered evaluations of some of the popular brands trying to pass themselves off as environmentally friendly. It's worth a look and appeared in yesterday's edition.

I started making my bed every day as a new year's resolution (even if some days it's just smoothing out the sheets and comforter and rearranging the pillows), and I've slept a lot better ever since.

I don't understand so many are against a TV in the bedroom. I've always had a TV in my bedroom and I have no troubles sleeping.

I don't watch TV every night before bed, but I like having the option of doing so, or watching it in bed when I'm sick, or while I fold laundry.

Plus nothing beats being able to lay down and snuggle during a nighttime movie, especially when it's chilly out!

We do all our living in our bedroom since we share an apartment and the other mate uses the living space as an office and works all hours. Any tips on creating a relaxing bedroom even when the mini-office, electronics, TV, eating, storage, etc. are all in the bedroom?

Whytephoenix - agreed. My wife has it so good!

I also have a fairly moderate standing on the TV. I did NOT grow up in a house that afforded TVs in bedrooms, and therefore still consider it a "living room thing." However we do have one in our room now, but don't use it that often. Aesthetically, I don't love the way it looks (not conducive to the serenity) and am currently looking for a small cabinet to close it away in. But occasionally we do love crawling in bed and watching a movie. And Wednesdays when I stay up late to watch Top Chef or Project Runway (depending on the season), we'd rather be together than separated, even if she falls asleep earlier.

The idea of leaving a sweet on the pillow is so fun! I just have to make sure my dog doesn't eat it during the day!!!

Some of these are good suggestions but I don't know what hotels have been inspiring you. Every one I have stayed in has a tv and a desk or workspace in the bedroom.

And I vote against the mini bar idea. In a nation facing an obesity epidemic, if you aren't hungry enough to drag yourself to the kitchen, then you aren't eating because you need food. Convenience eating to pass the time is a one way ticket to serious health issues.

The great thing about hotels is that you get to make a fresh mess every day and somebody cleans up after you!
