After the success of the first Alley Flat project built on the East Side, work began on the next site. This second project is a “granny flat” for a homeowner’s elderly grandmother. Comprising only a mere 600 square feet, the architects designed many sustainable features into the space, like lots of windows to capitalize on cross ventilation, clerestory windows to provide plenty of natural light and a floor plan that is efficient enough to allow air to flow throughout the building easily. This housing unit was built with the help of a general contractor, fifteen UT students, and four staff members, and only took a few months to complete. Most importantly, this project will add much needed space to this homeowner's property and still blend in with the character of the neighborhood.

The ACDDC is proud to announce that the second Alley Flat project will have a housewarming party on Thursday August 27th, from 6pm – 8pm, where you’ll be able to see all the project's money-saving and sustainable features in person, as well as get answers about the project directly from ACDDC members and architects involved. The project is located at 904 B Lydia Street on the East Side of Austin (and seeing as the photos in this post are before and during shots only, you'll definitely want to visit the site to see the finished project).
