Inspiration: Learning Upholstery with Spruce
Austin

021209spruce-01.jpg Anyone with the DIY spirit (or a deep love/obsession with furniture) probably knows well the frustration that comes along with acquiring a piece of furniture to refinish or recover only to discover you either don't have the right skills or the right tools. Well, there's one hip upholstery business here in Austin with the aims to educate residents with the basic skills to fix up old, yet stylish furniture. More after the jump!

021209spruce-04.jpg You might already be familiar with Spruce; they've been in many design blogs, Domino and even our own Apartment Therapy Chicago. Their fresh take on reupholstering old furniture with good bones is inspiring, and they have a thriving business recovering the furniture of Austin residents. Recently relocated in a new, larger showroom and studio on North Lamar, the ladies behind Spruce don't just keep all of their knowledge to themselves, rather, they offer classes so that anyone can learn the skills necessary to recycle furniture. The weekend classes, with varying affordable prices, teach students how to recover basic dining chairs, build a bench and even recover furniture as green as possible. Along with a great-looking showroom and offering classes, Spruce also offers up a selection of green and designer fabrics in their showroom. More information about their work and their classes can be found at spruceaustin.com.

Let us know if you've ever taken upholstery classes or if you've picked up the skill set on your own! Tell us about your favorite reupholstering story!

I have started an upholstrey project with the lovely ladies of Spruce and they are both fantastic to work with. I can not wait to get back there and finish my little sofa. Amanda and Lizzie are both incredibly talented at what they do!
