Inspiration: Promoting Community with Space 12
Austin

081609space-01.jpg Being big fans of the idea of community, we're always on the lookout for spaces that promote the idea of people creating together. When we came across the local venue Space 12, we knew we wanted to share...

081609space-02.jpg Space 12 is a collaborative and creative space on the East Side that hosts a number of public events. Ranging from talks, to art shows to even comedy shows, Space 12 serves as a reminder that sometimes things are best enjoyed when shared with other creative, like-minded people.

081609space-03.jpg Space 12 is operated by Austin City Spaces, a non-profit organization started by a group of Austin residents who worried Austin was losing public gathering spaces with all the recent city growth. Their desire is to "create spaces that build bridges toward community, encourage purposeful activity, and engage all of Austin into a unified discussion on how to live as neighbors and not as strangers."

While we love the ideas and philosophies behind the venue, we also think it's a great place to invest in purchasing local art for the home, as well as even gain art inspiration through viewing the unique art installations presented. Designed to be a place that encourages neighbors to gather, it's possible to find ideas for creating encouraging gathering spaces in one's own home.

That's a really great logo and a great-sounding organization.

in Dayton, we've got a space called C-Space that's only been going about a year or so, but it's definitely working under similar principles as Space 12. We call C-Space "a creative incubator" space. There are concerts and arts festivals, but it's also used as a space for people to get together and work on art projects, hold workshops, etc.

They're having an event tonight featuring teenagers who worked with architects to tackle questions regarding urban planning. You should go! http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=138994814501

There is a similar (but different?) space in Athens, Georgia called Nuci's Space. It is a non profit created by Nuci Phillips' mother after Nuci took his own life after suffering years of depression. Nuci was a musician and his space is a community gathering place for musicians and music lovers. It offers practice studios, performance space, hanging out space and best of all very inexpensive counseling services for young people. Check it out at www.nuci.org.

ginnymay- thanks for that website! What a great nonprofit. I have been considering relocating to Athens and love learning more about the area.
