Austin

082008homesick-01.jpg If you’ve taken any of our vacation advice this month, you might be well on your way to escaping on some wonderful getaway. You’ve probably considered everything—where you’ll stay, what you’ll do, where you’ll eat and even what you’ll wear. But we bet you haven’t considered one thing that could put a damper on your trip, homesickness! We’ve got 5 items to take along to help curb any case of homesickness that might sneak up on you while you’re away!

082008homesick-02.jpg As implausible as homesickness may seem when you’re planning for your vacation, bringing along a few affordable items can help calm the senses should a case creep up while you're away. These items might especially be valuable to the long-term solo world traveler!

  • Travel Candles Although new and exotic smells can be invigorating, stave off missing home a bit by bringing your favorite smell along in a travel size.
  • Digital Photo Frames Decided to go on vacation without the kids this year? Gaze at them as much as you want with a space saving digital photo frame.
  • Your own alarm clock While travel-size alarm clocks come in all sorts of cute sizes and styles, wouldn't it be nicer to wake up at night and look at your own familiar glowing-in-the-dark numbers?
  • Your own pillow and pillowcase Not only are some hotel pillows a bit suspicious, having the pillow that works for your head and neck and a pillowcase with familiar texture will help you get some serious rest while on vacation
  • Your favorite snack This is really for people who either have a really unique favorite snack, or for those traveling to exotic locales. You might love trying local food for a few days, but you might start missing your old comfort foods too.

Have you ever gotten homesickness when on a vacation? What did you do? Tell us what you think and give us your favorite homesickness cures!

I think I should know this, but who is the artist of that painting?

Thanks.

Those are good tips. Now I just have to figure out what to do about the other kind of homesickness - moving away from home...

If you're going on a cruise, candles are forbidden aboard ship.

And why bring an alarm clock? If you need to know the time, just use your cellphone...
...and pre-order room service breakfast to be delivered at the time you wish to wake up.

Frankly, I believe that if you actually have time to be homesick while traveling - You've either booked the wrong vacation or you're traveling for work.

The "favorite snack" is a truly great idea. Dried mango came into my life about a year ago and it is now a constant travel companion.
I find that a bit of the familiar eases the tense moments. Whether its dealing with baggage claim, jet lag, or emotional distress aka travel companion.

I am gone months at a time for work and do all these things - well except the pillow cause it is too much to take!
Another thing to take is a good speaker system for your ipod. My bf got me in the habit of leaving the ipod on so that you walk into favorite tunes. Nice welcome to a cold hotel room after a hard day.

favorite snack is a good idea, but the rest of it is not stuff worth hauling. I'd load pictures onto an iPod before schlepping a digital picture frame around.

The only thing I get "homesick" about is my closet! I HATE living out of a suitcase. If I'm going to be somewhere for more than two nights, I completely unpack... empty my suitcase, hang things up, fold in drawers/stacks, lay out my shoes, display all my toiletries... It makes it feel more like home, I guess. It does take extra effort, but it's easier to find things and you're not rummaging through your suitcase to find that one thing that you just know that you packed.

Homesick while traveling? I know I might have this if it was for business travel and ended up in Dallas for a week, but where I choose to travel I don't know of such thing too busy exploring.

Agreed. homesickness means you booked the wrong vacation!

I love my home and my life, but when i am on a vacation, i don't have time to be homesick. its not until im waiting in the airport to return that i start to wish i was home (and that's only because i hate waiting in airports).

When we were kids, we always travelled with our own pillows (for my brother and I) in a special ruffled sham my mom made. The sham was associated with going on a trip and something fun (as well as keeping dirt off the pillow during the travel) but inside was my own pillow with my own scent. It really did help me get to sleep in strange places.

Heck, even going to the beach as adults we take our own pillows, partially for comfort, partially because it's now tradition!

Thank you for using a painting by my favorite artist, Magritte! I am currently designing my bedroom in dedication to his work.
