Look: Cycling as a Getaway
Austin

082808cycling-02.jpgAlong with “keeping it weird” and super eco-friendly ideas, bicycles are something often considered synonymous with Austin. Travel anywhere in this city and you’ll see a bike or two zooming in and out of traffic or along a sidewalk. Lance Armstrong even made Austin his home! Whatever your level of biking---whether you cycle everyday, just bike occasionally or haven’t been on a bike since you were a kid---a cycling getaway is worth the consideration…

082808cycling-03.jpg Along with walking, a bike ride is a great way to get exercise and experience parts of your city you’ve never seen before. For those who cycle everyday, the benefits of a good bike ride seem obvious. If you haven't ridden in awhile, now might be the perfect time! They say you never forget...

082808cycling-04.jpg Even if you don’t own a bike yourself, there are plenty of places to rent bicycles here in Austin and in most other cities. If you do decide to go on a cycling trip with your own bike, make sure and check the bike to make sure it’s road-ready before you take off. We've gathered some resources for you to prepare for your own cycling getaway here in Austin:

  • For places to purchase, rent or tune up your bike in Austin, look here.

I love riding my bike in this city. With all the hills around town, bicycling will whip your body into shape whether you're trying to or not.

And, speaking of Lance, he just opened up a place call Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop downtown. Have not been yet, but from what I understand they offer classes and support for novice (and advanced) bikers and sales and service for bikes. Plus you can commute in to the city via bike, shower there and store your bike for a dollar.

Biking is the best way to get around Austin, hands down.

Also!- The City of Austin is offering a grant to some artists to design some really fancy bike racks downtown. I'd like to see some pictures of that when it happens, pretty please Apartment Therapy.

I ride my bike around the Windsor Park neighborhood in North East Austin. There are a lot of mid-century modern homes that have been cleaned and polished - great ideas for exterior paint colors and landscaping. The area is fairly flat for Austin and not much traffic to compete with.

While I totally appreciate the idea of bicycles, Austin needs more bike lanes. I'd really like to see fewer bikes running red lights and stop signs too...

I think Austin is a scary place to ride a bike. Many of the bike lanes are shared with bus routes and people drive like maniacs. Fortunately there are a lot of off-road places to ride.

The first photo is really nice, but am I the only one who didn't know that Austin was the capital of Texas? I thought Dallas was. My bad ::ducks::
