Look: Fence Me In Community Project! Austin

In keeping with the same theme as the Earth Day festivites post earlier this week, we'd like to tell you about another opportunity to help save the planet. If you live in Austin and really want to get your hands dirty after you learn about green ideas at the Earth Day celebration downtown, then head on over to the East Side where other Austin residents will be working on a local green idea: fencing in community gardens. The Architecture for Humanity organization in conjunction with Windsor Park and Festival Beach Community Gardens recogonized a need in many local community gardens in Austin: effective fencing and gates. Many local gardens need fencing that has a pedestrian gate, vehicle gate and provides security for the garden. Having a creative fence around a community garden also provides an opportunity to engage and educate passersby by letting them see into the garden while still protecting the plants inside. The designs for these fence projects involve a series of frames that could get filled in by the community with found materials. Many fill material ideas were provided by University of Texas students, like old sail fabric, trampoline material, glass bottles, lawnchair straps, tie down straps, wire coat hangers, old political signs, reed fence, string and beads---just to name a few.

This weekend Austin residents will have the chance to particpate in the fence building, working at the Windsor Park location with other volunteers to construct these unique but useful frame fences. The three work shifts are: April 18th from 8a.m – noon , April 18th from 1p.m. – 5p.m. and April 19th from 2p.m. – 6p.m. Plenty of jobs need completing, like digging post holes and building raised beds along with plenty of other duties.
