apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Roundup: See-Through Furniture Favorites
Austin

092608clearfurn-01.jpg For small apartments and homes, space is ultimately what we all try to maximize. With see-through furniture, you have not only an item that won't seem to take up much visual space, but will also be stunning and stylish. We've seen a number of great pieces of furniture designed over the years and thought they deserved their own round-up...

Usually made of acrylic or glass, these pieces of furniture are neat because they're see-through, but also because they've got a great design and shape to them. While we certainly wouldn't advocate a whole room decked out in clear furniture (that might be a bit much, afterall) one key piece in a space is absolutely dynamic!

What is your favorite clear furniture design? How have you used see-through furniture to add style (not bulk) to a space? Let us know!

i manage a store that carries kartell and could have got some louis ghosts at a huge discount, but i actually opted for the tobias instead. it's wayyy sturdier and doesn't scratch like the louis. i can't believe it's ikea!

When I lived in a 12'x12' Studio apartment, I couldn't afford (space-wise) that much furniture, because it would've looked too cluttered. My solution was an acrylic side table. It didn't occupy any visual space but it gave my apartment that "HOMEY" feeling you get when you have the right furniture in.

The clear bougie lamp by Philip Starck for Kartell is nothing short of fabulous.

I don't know if I could sit in a clear chair all the time. I would always be worried about my ass crack showing
I do love the tables tho

I don't like the lucite look myself. It does not look comfortable at all and I like the look of natural wood much better.

I don't usually like the look personally. I think I really like that tobias chair. Do they get spotted with fingerprints really fast? I have three sons under 5. :)

Ha... I suspected that about the Starck chair: isn't it going to scratch and look like total crap in a year? I like the look but it's totally impractical.

im wondering the same thing.. how well do these pieces age, especially with children in the picture??? it also seems like the acrylic pieces would show their age more-so than glass would. mostly because of scratching and fogging of the plastic. i could be totally wrong, but it just plays out that way in my mind.

Those Tobias chairs from IKEA are actually very nice looking in person. They are very sturdy and look well made. They are crystal clear and not at all cloudy (like some cheaper lucite/acrylic chairs).

having had the ghost chair in the past I loved it and having clear furniture makes spaces look so much larger. my ghost chair stood up well for me. I don't really understand how someone can see your bum crack unless you are sitting naked in it or someone is laying down behind your chair. having smaller and lower tables in clear material have worked well for me.
