111008bocon-01.jpg While we're normally a tad wary of non-local stores (we're just such huge fans of local business, you see), we had promised to bring you updates on all the new stores opening up in the 2nd Street District of downtown Austin and so were obliged to visit the BoConcept store. Luckily for us and fortunately for Austinites, this hip and modern showroom delighted us in every way! More after the jump...

111008bocon-02.jpg We were thoroughly surprised by all the possibilities for small apartment furnishings found at this store. Thinking all we would find was pricey furniture for downtown lofts, BoConcept proved us wrong by showing us all the affordable design solutions available from their lines. We loved that everything was so darn customizable. You can take an item from a line you like and add or subtract elements to find the size and look of a piece of furniture you need, and also the price! This customizable idea applies to nearly everything: couches, beds, nightstands, desks, tables---you name it.

111008bocon-03.jpg The sales staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and though we did cringe a bit at the prices of some things, they reminded us that with their furniture, a purchase of a small item that's perfect for your teeny apartment today isn't a waste. If you do move or upgrade home size, you can always add or change your BoConcept piece to create an investment!

111008bocon-04.jpg There even seemed to be a few pieces of furniture made specifically for the small home in mind, like our favorite: this dining table with built-in extension leaf. It starts out at a 36" square but with a little sliding action, becomes a roomy 71"!

111008bocon-06.jpg What do you think about BoConcept? Rather shop local or do you indulge every now and then for some big ticket items? Let us know! And Austin residents be sure to tell us of your first impressions of our new BoConcept showroom! Don't forget to check out last week's store we visited too: Kirk!

There's a Bo-Concept in Cambridge and I've been in a few times to look at their accessory type things. Every time I've been in there I cringed - and not just at the prices. The staff has always been cold and aloof - often times not even a hello.

Also - a friend bought a sectional from Bo and it was expensive and poorly made. When he was assembling the pieces he popped open the bottom of the sofa and the construction was some light pine type of wood.

Overall - not impressed with much beyond their accessories and throw pillows.

Bo Concept always looks better in photographs. Go to the store and it's one big yawn.

One of my favorite things about BoConcept is that you can design your own piece of furniture using the Furnish program. I believe they offer workshops on how to use Furnish and design your place.
