103008joanns-01.jpg We brought you a great local Austin resource for fabrics and crafts supplies not too long ago with Fanny's Fabrics. Well, we've got another great Austin fabric resource, full of inspiration and just in time to jump start all your Fall and Winter craft and home projects! More after the jump...

103008joanns-02.jpg Spacious yet full of creative items, Jo-Ann Fabrics has tons of great fabrics of all types, colors, patterns and textures. They have fabric for crafts and clothing, highly durable upholstery fabric options and also a series of designer fabrics that you can special order. We loved the huge selection of colors available and aisles seemed organized and prices reasonable.

103008joanns-03.jpg Not just carrying fabrics, they also offer supplies for other types of craft projects as well as some home decorative items, like these affordable baskets we found. This could be an unexpected resource for that hard-to-find house item you've been searching for!

Really?!? JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts is a good fabric source? Hey, did you know that Toys 'R' Us has lots of toys and Pizza Hut delivers pizza too? It's quite unexpected. [ /end sarcasm ]

You should also check out the Quilt Store (http://www.quiltstore.com/) - It's up 'north', but they have a pretty great selection (despite their website's impression). They sell fat quarters/smaller sizes too - which is great for smaller projects.

I have to agree with amt230. I've been an avid seamstress since I was quite young and consider myself to be a bit of a textile connoisseur. I've attempted to shop at Jo-Ann fabrics here in Virginia (up near DC and Richmond) and I consider it to be on the low end of mediocre at best when it comes to fabric. It's fine for some things but for good upholstery fabric you're better off looking elsewhere. BUT Jo-Ann is always good for stocking up on thread and other notions since they have very regular sales.

There really is a lack of good fabric stores here in Austin. I tend to buy mine online, but when i feel like shopping in person i hit the independent shops below.

Craft-O-Rama
www.austincraftorama.com

Silk Road
www.srfabrics.com

and also Fanny's and the Quilt store mentioned above.

Jo-Anns, Hancocks, and Hobby Lobby are as predictably boring here as anywhere.

The chain "fabric" stores in Georgia are no better.
Fabric is secondary / the last thing on the rung behind all the crafty stuff for Jo-Ann.
The fabric is either geared toward quilting or that sports-themed fleece used for "blankets". I couldn’t find anything for clothing that was actually practical and not intended for a costume or prom dress.

Thank goodness for Forsyth Fabrics and Lewis and Sharon for upholstery!

Monica is right about Jo-Ann in Virginia -- not that good for upscale fabric, great for regular notions. When I've needed upholstery fabric, I hit a great place in the charming little college town of Farmville called Discount Fabrics:

Discount Fabrics

115 E 2nd St
Farmville, VA 23901

Wonderful people, top-quality fabric and a fabulous sale room!

I hate JoAnn's. When I first moved to my town, there were over 6 different small, independently owned fabrics stores that really reflected the owners tastes. Each one was a treat to visit and I felt good about spending my money there. Now, they are all out of business and the JoAnn's that has run them out of town is a black hole of blech fabrics and clueless workers. It takes nearly 45 minutes to just get a piece of fabric cut and wait in line. Unfortunately it's the only place to get fabric without going on line.
AAhhhh, I HATE IT.

Y'all need to find a cheap flight to Burbank, LAX, or some other way to bring your bootie to L.A. Have all your ideas, measurements in hand or you'll wish you did! I will then collect you all and ferry you to the Garment District downtown for a seamster(tress)s culture shock:

*Michael Levine's. Their warehouse sells everything; anything. At prices you think are a mistake. And the table workers are NOT the sullen high schoolers of JoAnne's; these people are professionals, this is their life's work.

Did I mention directly across the street is also Michael Levine's, but it's the upholstery and drapery fabrics. There are multi-story buildings that only deal in feathers or buttons or ribbon -- an excess of riches.

BTW: If you're from NY, fugeddaboudit!
