Survey: Themed Rooms
Austin

092608themed-01.jpg We loved Emilie's post about wall murals earlier today. It got us thinking about rooms that go a little beyond just a wall mural and into the realm of themed rooms. Here in Austin, we're no strangers to themed spaces (these photos were taken from Esther's Follies on 6th Street). In fact, once we were invited to a party at a home where each of the rooms upstairs had a theme! There was a jungle room, an Asian-inspired decor room and of course, an aquarium themed bathroom...

092608themed-02.jpg Outside of a kid's room (which practically anything can go), how attractive is it to have a themed room in a home? Is it a way to let loose and have fun with decor, or is it just too tacky? Is it okay to have a room based around a favorite sport/movie/television show or is that off-limits for "grown-up" homes? Let us know!

I think it's fine for adults, so long as it's tastefully done.

I've considered doing a "Breakfast at Tiffany's" theme in my bathroom. The walls are already painted champagne gold...

I love Halloween, so my home is almost a 'theme' home right now!

Like most anything, it really depends on th execution. There is a fine line between chic and costume-y

we're planning to do a map/travel theme for our guest room, with a big world map mural and various globes, souvenir trays, photos from past travels, etc. I've also considered a nautical theme for our living room, but I like the brocade tapestry curtains I made too much to give them up. I think I am going to hang a bunch of marine-themed prints and artwork and call it a day.

I think a theme room is fun, and who the hell cares if it's "tasteful" or not? I think the trick is to go all out and don't half-ass it and leave people wondering. If you're going to do it, go for the gusto!

Sanna- I totally agree. I love themed rooms, but only when they're done well. My living room is "1950s grandma who has good taste sunroom" themed.

I'm in the long, slow process of decorating an apartment that I plan to stay in for several years. I inherited a tiny bathroom with Pepto-Bismol pink tile. Rather than fight its inherent kitsch (I'll be diplomatic and not say "tackiness") I'm embracing it and making it my Big Gay Drag Queen/Madonna shrine. Mind you, it's not going to win any Apartment Therapy reader contests, but it's a fun room to be in!

I kind of think that if you find yourself asking questions like this, you aren't ready for a theme room. The friends I know who have theme rooms that work (undersea, Moroccan) needed their theme rooms like they've never needed anything. And I might not want either in my apartment, but neither feels forced or contrived. Both feel like someone's exuberance and passion.

If you've stopped to ask yourself whether this theme room is going to be chic ... it isn't.
