4 Budget-friendly Wall Ideas from Inside Out
Melbourne

Budget’s may be tight, but we still want to make our homes happy, inspiring places to be in. All we need is a little creative thinking and a willingness to DIY. New furniture can be expensive, so look to your walls – they are great areas to play with cost effective ideas that create visual impact within your space. Inside Out’s March/April issue featured 4 DIY ideas to spruce up tired walls. Details below.

Painted Pegboard with S-Hooks
The silver pots and pans look great against the coloured background. Pegboard is cheap and you can paint it any colour you like. This is also a great idea if your kitchen is lacking in storage space or you want a quick-grab storage option for often used items.
Their tip: hang your board on a frame away from the wall.

Framing ‘Things’
This is actually a skirt, laid out flat within the frame. We like this idea because you probably already have something you can re-appropriate into a picture frame. Think scarves, things collected while travelling, even a favourite old t-shirt could look good framed – make it personal.

Door-knob Hooks
We always hang coats on door knobs, so we loved the idea of turning door knobs into wall hooks. Source vintage door knobs from flea markets or salvage yards. We’re not exactly sure how you would attached them to the wall, so clever reader suggestions are welcome.

Decal Art with Hooks
Yes, there have been many posts on decal art, what appealed about this one was the incorporation of hanging hooks. This idea could work in the kitchen, bedroom (jewellery) or create a dramatic landing strip.
Their tip: Paint hooks to match the decal. Think about what you want to hang, e.g. leave plenty of space for necklaces.

I really like the graphic quality of the framed skirt.

VERY cool.

I've attached doorknobs to the wall using a double sided screw (dowel screw)-you can find them in any hardware store.

hey, not to be annoying, but are budgets so tight that you have to put an apostrophe on the word? I love the ideas-- some really cool ones! but misplaced apostrophes, not so much.

The decals with hooks idea is freaking me out. I am in the process of planning out something almost identical to this in my front entry. I'm going to attempt to paint black trees with black hooks on a white wall.

Ha, so many editors here. The apostrophe thing drives me nuts when nothing belongs to anyone, but that's another discussion for another day. I'm a professional editor and writer, and I've seen some funny stuff. But on the other hand, that's why I'm hired--to be the expert wordsmith. I'll let the AT people be the expert finders and posters, and hooray for diversification.

As for the post--the decal wall hook idea is fantastic. I had to look twice. You could also paint something yourself if you were averse to decals.

The framed-object idea would add a great personal touch, but as I've recently discovered, custom framing (like you would need for some custom objects) is anything but budget-friendly. Unless, of course, there are some DIY framers out there!

Too many seem to be distracted by the apostrophe thing (which, along with other grammar errors, happens all too frequently on AT) and haven't taken proper notice of these ideas.

Pegboards in the kitchen are so 60s. Surely we've moved past that? And, door knobs on the walls? And, I can't even bring myself to mention that other idea-thing with the tree and the cups and the pitcher and the dishcloth and whatever.

Clearly my drugs aren't working, because I seem to be, once again, a minority of one that understands this post must have been a joke. Right? Right???

Dear Ms. Pea,
As a self proclaimed Doctor, I wish to advise you to stay on your medication. You are not a minority of one, the masses have simply been distracted by ailing grammar. Besides, you'll need all the drugs you can get for Bethz next toilet roll post.
Sincerely, Dr P. Speedway.
