Located in Redfern, 3kms from Sydneys CBD, is where Villa Redferno can be found. Owner and architect Scott Weston is responsible for many prominent homes in Sydney, but its in his own home where we really get a sense of his bold and confident use of both colour and texture. From the stunning use of mosaic tiles in the bathrooms and garden to the hand printed wallpapers, Scott clearly has his hands on some of the best product sources in the country. While its easy to get excited about each of these elements, its what this architect chooses to do in him own home which is truly insightful. Take the full tour after the jump...

AT Survey:
My style: Eclectic Modern mixed with rich materials, forms and finishes.
Inspiration:The Victorian qualities that are the buildings bones and then overlaying a modern interpretation of Victoriana through the use of modern materials and finishes. ie: Embossed silver laminates juxtaposed with hand printed wallpapers.
Favorite Element: The connection between the formal living and dining rooms and their play upon opposites of turquoise and scarlet red pinks. Also the contrast of leaving those formal spaces and continuing on to the open plan living, dining, kitchen and the visual link to my garden with the red raised planter.
Biggest Challenge: As the entire house was gutted, partly demolished and re-built then keeping a tight lid on the budget whilst not compromising on the quality and attention to detail.
What Friends Say:They say it’s a bit like the tardis from the outside as you have no idea as to what greets you once you venture inside. They like the grandeur of the formal rooms and that I have re-instated the main components of the terrace with original cedar doors and ornate plasterwork.
Biggest Embarrassment: Never embarrassed about my home as it truly is a beautiful home to live, work and relax.
Proudest DIY: I don’t DIY as I leave that to the professional contractors to do it for me otherwise I would have some major embarrassment going on behind closed doors.
Biggest Indulgence:My artwork collection that is slowly filling blank white walls of my living room.
Best advice: Live your dream and don’t be afraid to experiment with what you want. Also never take ‘no it cannot be done’ because believe me, you just haven’t found the right contractor.
Dream source:Cabramatta in South Western Sydney for Asian fabrics, collectibles and Italian furniture. Hong Kong for global fixtures and fitments.

There are some nice moments in the house but overall it is not my taste.
One thing that does bug me is the line-up of designer chairs in that loft area. They don't go together other than the fact that they are generally accepted as well designed (I would argue the hand form) and are expensive. Beyond that there is no relationship and it comes off as too museum-y and more of a way to show-off your collection than anything. The designers made those chairs in order to fit seamlessly in the proper living enviornment. In here they are stuck to a wall without even being arranged to invite guests to sit and have a conversation.

Wow, what pop, what gusto! Love it. Would I want to live there?--probably be too much for me day to day, but love the idea that places like this exist. Very original and exciting.
That rug in the living room is incredible and I love those low slung chairs.
Thanks for sharing!

I really love the courtyard. Of course, I don't have a dog or feel an absolute need for a grass-covered lawn, so that's just me (and my lazy, low-maintenance loving self).
Wonderful use of color! A bit more bold than I would have gone, overall, but it definitely has personality.
Sort of agree with shlacking on the chairs, though. They really do beg to be put in the correct environment to be used and appreciated as intended.

love the pink and blue bathrooms and that pink chair paired with that plum bed covering. nicely done!

This post had me lingering on several of the images while I sit here in a Nyquil/Dayquil tired like stupor (Nyquil from last evening before bed) but I found myself noticing details within the space quite a bit and the judicious use of color and often pairing it with white for that sense of pop.
Some rooms are a little over the top for me, the dining room and the bathrooms which are either all blue or all fuscia, the blue worked better for it's a more restful color in general. But love how you treated the kitchen/family space very well, at once has museum quality elements and yet looks like it's also a practical room for day to day living. I love how you chose to pair red with dark blue for the kitchen cabinets and then add pops of fuscia to the space while at the same time toning it down some w/ black and white to keep it from overpowering the space. That room especially I love.
I also love how you brought color outside with that red mosaic tiled planter that is partially encorporated into the wooden bench. Very nice.
This post may well help me to better define my love for color to share in my online journal.
The biggest thing I find is too many seem to be afraid of going out there w/ their color choices and it often shows w/ rooms full of neutrals, beiges or if there is color, it's soft, muted and often not a lot of it and to see people use color boldly but also generally know when to stop when it gets to be too much.

I like SO much about this place. The colors are wonderful, the courtyard is a dream come true and I would hang out in the pink bathroom when I wasn't hosting a fun dinner party in that dining room with the pink chandelier!
The room with the chairs lined up doesn't fit with the rest of the place.
Overall so fun and youthful feeling and fresh.

I liked the the bright colors used throughout, and the courtyard was amazing. The dining room was a bit headache inducing and I wasn't crazy about the line of designer chairs lined up against the wall..that just looks weird.

Go easy on the attic folks its not a shrine to my furniture collection.
That photo was taken when I first moved in and had my chairs up there for storage and were lined up against the wall. They are now throughout the house and the attic is back to being just that an attic!

wow. very postmodern. i love parts of it - turquoise and red is always a winner in my book - but other parts feel like a david lynch movie, they are so surreal (especially the chairs in the attic, glad to hear they have been dispersed). thats not necessarily a bad thing (i love david lynch) but not something i personally would want to live with. beautiful garden by the way.

that is a pink bathroom i can get behind.
Overall super fun, so individual with an amazing sense of risk taking - a pink and purplie kitchen! totally nuts and really unexpected.
Its not everyones taste which I think is great. its very much his personal flavor and feels very unique and not overly safe and acceptable. It smells of money, but isn't overly stuffy or rigid. Love the garden and can only encourage more people to collect more art - it makes such a huge difference in a home.

Scott my friend, if the chairs were there because you were mid-move and not because you specifically put them there then my comment no longer applies. Believe me, I've seen it done before and that looks just isn't pretty.
Great house.

Not sure where to start--I love so much about this house. But then, I am a color freak.
First, this is a fairly big house but it seems smaller and more cozy than a lot of the more modern ones I see on AT. Love that. Second, I love how even though you have used a lot of saturated color, you have kept many of the rooms somewhat monochromatic. You also do something I always try to do--consider how the views work from one room to another.
Just one thing about the "museum of chairs"--I do think it detracts from the tour. Everything else is so finished and thought-out, and it just looks sort of sad. The other thing is that it draws attention to your collection of high-end stuff, whereas in all the other rooms it's all seamlessly woven in in an unpretentious way.
Overall, this is one of my favorite tours ever and I will be looking back to it for inspiration. Thank you!

This is a question for Scott rather than a comment....do you find that having the bathrooms completely tiled made the space seem larger or smaller (or neither)? I am thinking of doing the same thing, but our bathroom is not very large and I would hate to make it seem closed in.
Great place by the way - I love the courtyard, and the blue tones throughout make me very happy.

While this looks incredibly cool, I wouldn't be able to live there. I'd have fun visiting, but some of the elements--the bright colors everywhere, sharp edges in the bathroom--go against my love of earth tones and calming elements.

Scott: the most obvious bravo is your bold use of unique colors: the purple stairs, a bright pink bathroom, a bright blue bathroom, a high lavender fabric divider to eclipse a red and blue lacquered kitchen! WOWZA! I love it all. I love how it is so outside the box and yet conveys all that we yearn to be in the box: comfort, style, coziness and a certain smartness. You nailed it baby.
Love the floating nightstands with the antique bed.
Love the high lavender thonet chairs with the brown 70's print.
Love the kitschy glass grape cluster.
Love the repeat of small colorful tiles in the patio. So unexpected yet so perfect.
Love love love love love. So fresh and fabulous.
view ShellyinMSP's profile
Scott, can you tell us what the name of the turquoise color is? It seems like a perfect match to the tiffany's box.
thanks!
view coophaus's profile
The turquoise is called 'Tiara Turquoise' and is a Wattyl Paint.
As the house was a 2 year construction time frame and it was partly demolished and re-built my budget was lean. I wanted to tile the bathroom ceilings as well to create a total cocooning effect. The bathrooms also have 3 metre high ceilings with concealed storage behind the mirror doors.
I could not afford to tile the ceilings so ended up painting them vivid white. By only using one material for the walls and floor it makes the bathrooms appear much larger than they really are, so I would encourage you to to use one material.
We have been using a great product called stratificato and comes 1200 x 3050 in sheets if you look on my website you see that we have installed it in large panels with minimal joints. It's easy to keep clean and is great for compact spaces.
What is it with Architects and chairs??????????
Yes I do have a collection and the circular table and chairs downstairs are artek. The polyurethane fuchsia pink thonet cafe ones are now in my office to match the fuchsia goats hair carpet runner up the staircase.
Hello Kitty Cu Cu Clock was purchased from Sanriotown in Sydney and is an original.
Secondly the large lamp is a Tolomeo from Artemide and is extremely pactical for reading by and general lighting the living room.
Thanks for your comments everyone and I understand it may not be to everyone's taste but that's what good design is about. Creating unique spaces for individuals.

love the turquoise room.
view Brett Torrey's profile
The rug is 100% wool and purchased from Visual Artist Masmoudi who runs an art gallery in inner city Chippendale.
He designs the rugs and then has them handmade in his homeland of Tunisia.
The one in the living room reminds me of a Paul Klee colour study and another in the guest bedroom is olive green covered in tiny flowers. A very clever man!

Pink for girls and blue for boys are you for real!
Have you never been to India or heard the famous quote from Diana Vreeland........'Pink is the navy blue of India'.
We live on a continent that embraces colour and to be defined by stereotypical colour choices ain't in my vocabulary.
view Scott Weston's profile
I'm so glad that you've done a sympathetic renovation in the old part of the house. I live in Birchgrove and so many of the gorgeous Victorian houses are falling victim to people who rip out all the original fireplaces and ceiling roses, stick halogen spots everywhere and cement render the whole thing and paint it taupe.
view harbourbridge's profile
I'm not saying anyone has to go by colors - LOL - just put it this way, I can't think of one guy I know who would live in a hot pink and brilliant purple apartment like this.
view ChrisGal's profile
I usually love popping colours, but this one's not doing it for me. Perhaps it's because the colours look a bit too easter-eggy and in that sense, not 'rich' enough for my palate (like the house in India with the jewel tones that was posted a week or so ago). But hey, it's good to see things other than stark white, and more importantly, he loves it and that's all that matters!

As someone who likes bold, slightly unnatural colors, this place excites me. I live in a cookie 1-bdr apt, so when I go bold with color, things don't look all that dramatic ever! I love the pink bathroom! I love your house way better than the white walls/wood floors/restrained aesthetic seen on this site often. Color is the spice of life! (I know, it's "variety," but I made up my own quote...)

I just realize I have seen your interior designs before on your website because of that other house you designed with the gold leaf pantry door. That is one of my all time favorite houses, very modern Marrakech. I thought this house looked familiar or the fact that the colors you used reminds of of the late Luis Barragan which I got to see his work the first time I visited Mexico D.F.

I love all the vibrant colors. How exciting! The place seems like it would definitely put you in a great mood. The only thing that I didn't care for was the shear curtain that divides the kitchen and living room. I think that would bug me (I would feel closed in) when preparing food. Even though you could tie it back, I would just get rid of it. Overall, I love the place!

I think your house looks fantastic! Very unique and individual. Can you tell me about the mirrored doors on the storage piece in the living room. Was that piece built in along with the shelves or is it a stand alone piece. Thanks so much.
view malhgold's profile
Living room doors are a reminder of the 'ghost of fireplaces past' as there once was a traditional fireplace in that location. The whole unit inclusive of the shelves and doors either side was built-in.
By reinstating the traditional form of the space and rather than install the traditional fireplace I opted for a storage 2.7 metre high hinged door cupboard.
Mirror to the door face would have been too modern so I specified Abet Metalli Silver 2705 (Laminate) with a slight embossed pattern that harks back to Victorian pressed metal dado patterns. It captures and diffuses the reflections in the room without being too harsh.

Pink is just a color. Actually, back in the day, boys wore pink and girls wore blue. It's all in your mind.
By the way, I asked this before but I'm not sure I could find it - the floor lamp with the three sticks as a base - where is it from?

I really enjoyed the hell out of this house, but as I have not much else original to add (but perhaps to say that I found the line of chairs to fine as a 'statement' or for what they truly were: awaiting placement) I do want to comment to say that I am very appreciative as to the breakdown given with products and where one can find them on the internet. Folks have been clamoring for that for a long time in many places (online, in print, etc) and I am really glad to see someone break it down as such.
As someone who has done web design - as far as shaping it for the eye of the reader - I wonder if those links/resources might better serve as a sidebar next to the photo they refer to as opposed to a long list? It's a bit awkward to hop around the page to try to match things up: photo / contents / links. I also realize that this would be a bit of a challenge to your current set up, but maybe a link to a 'Home Resource Page' that has the photos in a static waterfall with the links/comments beneath them? Certainly not all tours would want or justify this treatment, but it may be a clean & user friendly alternative -thanks for ear, Apt Thrpy
Scott Weston: so glad that you hopped in and out and made this a real dialogue! Very dynamic approach to a home tour - and your personality in comment compliments the images, fleshing everything out in such a fantastic way. Thanks!
