wow! that dieffenbachia is really dramatic! we get a lot of it here in India and we do use it a lot for decoration, but i've never seen one with such nearly black leaves.
i've also heard that the sap of the dieffenbachia is poisonous, and causes speech impairment, and therefore its common name, dumb cane. don't know if its true, though.

Cactina - true. However I wouldn't worry about a toddler tipping it over; a specimen of that size is probably pretty bottom-heavy. It appears to be in terra cotta. Still not a good plant to have around kids or pets, though.
My mom has a lime green one she loves... I haven't seen it yet.

Yikes I think the Dieffenbachia is a real mismatch for the kitchen. The kitchen is too light and bright to support such a large, heavy, dark plant - especially on counter top level.

diffenbachia's are definitely poisonous and care should be taken around pets and children. and that poor plant is stuffed into far too small of a pot! they're beautiful plants, though, with leaves with amazing detail in a variety of colors.
