Look - Kylie Stillman’s Book Carvings
Melbourne

071308book01.jpgHaving a love for old patterned Readers Digest books because they look so pretty we were excited when we saw them being used for book carvings. Kylie Stillman has carved to scale bonsai trees into the side of a stack of books and a range of birds into open books.

071308book02.jpgWe really like the contrast between the bright inner covers and the layers of words. Kylie has also done some giant versions of the bonsais out of plywood and carving on venetian blinds. See her website here for more of her work.

Nice, but just what is it with cut up books lately? AT bloggers seem to want to create some commotion in the comments I guess, or is it clear provocation?

Anyways, despite the book lover I am, I do find this nice, and yes some books aren't worth keeping.

Wow. Her work is totally gorgeous. Have you checked out her venetian blinds? They're also at her website: http://www.kyliestillman.com/page2/files/page2-1012-full.html. The bookshelf with the flying geese is fantastic too. I'm all for cutting up books in the name of art like this.

Many of the artists who use books as a medium use books that have been water damaged or are missing pages. Essentially, they are repurposing books that would have otherwise been discarded.
