Look: Stencil Art Splash Back
New Zealand Australia

103108new02.jpgHere in Australia we tend to claim anything successful from New Zealand as our own. Take Russel Crowe, Crowded House and Australia's Greatest Racehorse Phar Lap for example, however, those New Zealanders have kept a very tight grip on Flight of The Concords. At the moment we keep seeing so many creative things coming out of NZ that we’ve decided to claim this one as our own. See a close up after the jump…

103108new01.jpgCreated by New Zealand based stencil artists Component and Flox, this splash back is like no other we’ve ever seen. While not everyone has this kind of illustrative talent, it does back up the thinking that paint can make all the difference to a room.

It's too much for my taste but interesting nonetheless.

i wouldn't want it, but i still LOVE it. it needs a lot of space, that much is clear.

It looks great, and correctly positioned as a focal point on a backdrop of white walls, door and millwork. But a splashback is called that for a reason. Cooking involves all those natural juices in meat and vegetables, and milk, and olive oil, let alone lamb fat (we are talking NZ, right?) - how long the mural will stay its beautiful self in these unforgiving conditions?

Beautifully done but would have worked better with about 1/2 the detail. It's just too heavy to work in that space.

I'm with Theo - this looks like something you'd see in a vintage 80's townhouse powder room. Shivers.

The artist is immensely talented but it overwhelms the space.

That is a beautiful illustration -- too beautiful for a kitchen.
