This weekend is a huge weekend in Melbourne with the annual State of Design Festival happening all around town. One of the stand out events from last year which attracted over 25,000 people was Melbourne Open House. This year it is bigger and better with 32 buildings across Melbourne opening their doors and welcoming in the public. We’ve picked out 5 that we’ll definitely be stopping by, see which ones below the jump…

Manchester Unity Building - Every time we walk past this building we gaze upwards in awe. Covered in glazed terracotta tiles in a gothic style, this building was the first to have escalators in Victoria. During the tour you’ll go up those escalators to the first floor, visit the Grand Secretary’s office, the boardroom and up to the rooftop on the 12th floor.

Fifteen Restaurant – Part of the Jamie Oliver franchise, we’ve been watching the re-runs of the Australian series and are curious to see who of the original group are still there. During the tour you’ll get to talk to the staff as well as going behind the scenes to see the kitchen as well as the bar and dining rooms.

The Melbourne Athenaeum - Built in 1842, the building is almost as old as Melbourne! This iconic building is a beauty and amazingly the Athenaeum has been in continuous operation for almost 170 years. During the tour you’ll get the chance to visit the theatre, reading room and 60,000 volume Library.

Russell Place Substation - We don’t know a lot about how substations works but we are excited to get the chance to have a look through one! After going down 3 flights of grate stairs in protective safety gear you’ll see the switchrooms, transformer compartments, the DC room and a demonstration of some glass bulb mercury arc rectifiers. Sounds like Scienceworks on crack!

Hamer Hall - We’ve seen many extraordinary gigs at Hamer Hall so getting the chance to see backstage areas, dressing rooms and wander around on stage just like many musicians we’ve watched is a must for us. Next year a huge redevelopment will be started on the building and you'll also get the opportunity to hear about those plans.

These are just a couple of the buildings involved in this Sunday’s Open House, see the full list here. Entry is free to all buildings however some require booking on the date and have clothing regulations.

There are heaps of different events happening over the weekend, to see them all visit the State of Design website here or visit The Design Files as Lucy is the official blogger for the festival.

This was really busy last year; there was a massive queue outside the Manchester Unity Building, so it's a good idea to go early.

It was awesome!

I was one of the lucky few to get into the Russell Place Sub-Station... We got there at 10:00 and still had to line up for an hour.

I have some photos on my blog for those who got scared away by the line (that reached all the way around the block!)
