This week's favorites: jigsaw puzzle soap, nostalgic air-mail postcards, an octopus-theme to-do pad, and nifty van-shaped gift boxes.

ed.jpg
"Edgar's Tears" print ($13) by Portland artist Amelia. I'm also a fan of her portrait "Rainy Day."

sycamore.jpg
"Sycamore" linocut ($45) by artist/biologist KShanks, who gets "very grumpy" when she's not making art. "Winter Goldfinch" is equally striking.

animalcards.jpg
Petting Zoo tags ($7) by Chicago design team PearlMarmalade would look great framed, grouped, and hung in a child's room.

cantileverwineholder.jpg
•Break free from the tyranny of the wedding-gift registry and get this cantilevered wine holder ($34) by Prince Street Woodcrafters instead.

Craigslist Scavenger: Crate and Barrel Madison chairs for $480

madisonchair.jpgWe're improving on this post. These Six Crate and Barrel Madison chairs look like they're in top condition and ready to go for the discount of roughly half price. If you have a hankering for the sturdy C&B style in a nice espresso finish, this will solve your seating problem in a jiffy.

thejungle.jpg
"The Jungle” illustration ($19.99) by Annie Wilkinson, an ice hockey-playing designer and illustrator.

ossobucco.jpg
"On the Contrary" print ($20) by Ossobuco, who lives by the unforgiving motto "Art or die."

EBay Scavenger: Pet-Friendly Finds

biube.jpg
Eight-gallon Biorb desktop aquarium for $99.99, including shipping. This is one of the more attractive fish tanks I've seen, with an unobtrusive filtration system, halogen lights instead of sickly fluorescents, and a pipe hidden in plain sight.

palazzo.jpg
Palladian litter box cover ($29.95) is made of high-gloss, laminated display board.

litterbox.jpg
Kitty a Go-Go litter box ($105) in polka dots, metallic silver, or leopard.

rollerpetcarrier.jpg
Rolling pet carrier. At $149.95, this also functions as a backpack and car seat.

EBay Scavenger: Small Fry Edition

automoblox.jpg
Automoblox C9 sports car. This building-block-cum-car is crafted of German wood, and its parts can be mixed and matched with other models.

bertoia.jpg
Bertoia wire child's chair. I would drape a flokati rug over this chair for comfort.

kaybojesen.jpg
Kay Bojesen wooden horse. Bojesen was a silversmith who designed iconic children's cutlery and sturdy, whimsical wooden animals.

transplant.jpg
"Transplant" ($20) by self-taught artist Mark Brown, whose figures bear some similarity to the puppets of Red Nose Studio. Snap up a print before a gallery gets hold of Brown and raises his prices.

lovebird.jpg
Embroidered "Lovebird" ($14) on cotton fabric by BigSkyStarlet. "Light as a Feather" and "Pump d'Or," too, combine handmade charm and sophistication.

vixen.jpg
"Vixen" plate ($20) by Trixiedelicious. Ask her to do a set of "deadly sins" plates: lust, avarice, vice, and sloth, for example.

mechanicalbs.jpg
Mechanical B***s*** ($20) poster by Limescreen. Several other designs, including "Splitting Headache," would make great wall hangings, so inquire.

eBay Scavenger: Domino Duplicates, Part II

My quest to find highly covetable items that have appeared in Domino continues...

thomaspaulplates.jpg
Thomas Paul faux-bois melamine plates, as seen at It's (K)not Wood. These are a cinch to hang and won’t break if they fall. At $22, there are no bidders.

hollywoodregencytable.jpg
Black faux bamboo table. Versatile – and on wheels!

cafecanister.jpg
French pedestal coffee jar. Chic.

fornasettipillow.jpg
Fornasetti pillow. If you're going to spend $95 on a pillow, you might as well get something that's highly collectible.

motherearth.jpg
Earth Queen ($20) photograph by Phoot.

erasoul.jpg
"Patterns" drawing ($65) by Erasoul.

orchid.jpg
Green fuschia-tipped orchid ($9) cultivated by Norma of Katy, Texas. Her prices are rock-bottom.

eBay Scavenger: Domino Magazine Duplicates Week

I combed through back issues of Domino, wondering whether I could find items similar to those that have appeared in its pages. As usual, eBay yielded a bonanza...

coffeetable.JPG
O Series turquoise lounge table - reserve set around $750.

apothecaryjar.jpg
Vintage apothecary jar - I like the slightly wavy glass. The magazine shows one of these holding TP, but I'd put turquoise and green soap cubes in it instead.

featherwreath.jpg
Feather wreath – ask if the feathers are real before bidding. Domino showed a purple one, but I like this natural version.

pastisbottles.jpg
Vintage pastis bottles - start a collection!

A Gaggle of Etsy Goodies: Breakfast-themed brooches; not-your-everyday diaper bags; snazzy sandwich sacks; Wanderlust map wallets; affordable, handmade baby quilts; and perfect linen booties from a moonlighting architect.

espressocups.jpg
Vibrant espresso cups and saucers ($18) from Susanne in the Netherlands. Her tapas set is equally eye-catching.

astronautboy.jpg
Ink illustration ($20) by Sadly Harmless.

heartattack.jpg
Digitally printed illustration “Heart Attack” ($15) by Magic Jelly (contact seller to purchase).

woodcut.jpg
Color-reduction woodcut ($125) by new seller Dominique Ellis. Perfect for that dead space above the sofa.

What we love about Etsy: Jokey t-shirts and cheeky letterpress engagement announcements.

phillyatnight.jpg
“Philadelphia at Night” by KMorrison ($28). A gritty street suddenly appears paved with gold.

ride.jpg
“Ride” by Stephanie Bonham ($20). An arresting image from
an Austin artist.

magnus.jpg
“Magnus” ($10) by Jes, who explains that “smut” means “brown,” at least when the subject is Rhode Island Red roosters. Any money you spend at her Etsy shop will go toward the care and feeding of her animals, which include a horse and turtle.

outerdark5.jpg
Outer Dark 5 by Justyn Hegreberg ($10). A bold, minimalist image printed on canvas from an artist who states unabashedly, “I make images I like. I do not address issues.”

What we love about Etsy: Felt hams and pork chops ; handmade decoupage treasure boxes by an architectural designer; and the ability to browse 100 random items.

brownvase.jpg
Beehive vase by Seattle glassblowers Votiv ($25). I’d put a small branch of Chinese-lantern plant or bittersweet in this appealingly small vase. I wish these sellers would list collections of vases in the same color family, as shown in the picture accompanying their bio.

spinney.jpg
“Spinney in Spring” cyanotype by Jim Read ($10). “Spinney” is British for a small grove of trees – a copse, in American. This elegant, melancholic photo reminds me of why woodlands have given birth to so many mythical creatures.

bandits.jpg
"Little Bandits" print ($20). For a 24-year-old artist, Ashley G’s vision is remarkably consistent. The humor of “Little Bandits” adds needed warmth to what can be stark and slightly unnerving pictures, even when the subjects are ostensibly children. I also like the saturated color of “Come On In” and the sketch-like “Gaggle of Girls.”

toad.jpg
“Toad” etching by GhostEater ($75). Robert Viana teaches printmaking and runs an art-supply store. His "Year of the Dog" woodcut would make an excellent custom birth announcement.

jellyfish.jpg
“Wired” photograph by NJesiolowski ($8.50). An usually striking image. The otherworldliness of the jellyfish contrasts with the groundedness of the figures in foreground.

benschlitter.jpg
Set of Six Treetops Postcards ($10). Ben Schlitter, a Kansas-based graphic designer, silk-screens these cards, which would add a grace note to any correspondence. If I were a landscape designer, I’d ask Schlitter to design my letterhead and business cards.

joompillows.jpg
Linen Hummingbird 2 pillow ($28). So many pillows are overpriced. Sorry, Agnes and Hoss and Hable Construction, I can’t stomach $173, even for the most sumptuous of pillows. And why should I, when Joom K. is offering these silk or linen beauties for less than $30?

eamespendant.jpg
Enamel Chair pendant ($30). Eames fans, here’s your chance to broadcast your passion. Seller Orange Peel enamel will begin taking custom orders again in the fall. Browse sold items and find a design you like, then request an enamel plaque suitable for hanging or display ($20).

tommillea.jpg

Tom Millea platinum print from seller russlevin, whose sales I keep an eye on. I appreciate his 7-day return policy, as well as his willingness to buy photos back if their owners later tire of them. He’s confident that this photo will appreciate in value, and I think he’s right.

wshomelamp.jpg
Crystal globe lamp from Williams Sonoma Home. While I prefer Thomas O’Brien’s crystal lamps (available at Marshall Fields), this one is pretty and versatile. While not quite the “deal of the century” that the sellers claim, the starting price is $5, and there’s no reserve.

neoclassicaltable.jpg
Neoclassical cocktail table. This is everything you want in a cocktail table: graceful proportions, visual airiness, and a touch of glamour.

bakerchest.jpg
Reproduction chest. Seller Brighton Furniture Company quite deftly copies Barbara Barry's collection for Baker Furniture. I’m skeptical, but their feedback is great, and these seem to be good-quality knockoffs at very reasonable prices. Jump on their auctions before Baker sends them a “cease-and-desist” letter.
