Garden Tour: Heseon & John's Coastal Hideaway Garden

ATLA Outdoor Home Month: Redondo Beach

In light of ATLA's Outdoor Home Month, we'd like to share the transformation of a once uninspired backyard narrow walkway into a little bit of tropical paradise done by our friends Heseon and John of Redondo Beach. Inspired by their globe trekking travels to Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa, their once humble slim proportioned backyard was transformed into a celebration of inviting greenery, textures and colours, and collectibles from around the world. Take a peek, with many more photos under the cut...

Heseon: "Our challenge was to turn our condo's tiny sliver of a backyard, which had been acting as an unsightly mini doggie doo pit, for years---into a urban-tropical-getaway-retreat. We'd also need room to grow veggies and herbs, so when I moved in last fall, I started tackling the yard right away, from a design perspective. I created an inspiration board and posted up pictures: Matt James' urban gardener work; pictures from tropical hotel and resort websites; design magazines focusing on small yards; and books on how to construct fountains. We hired a contractor, who built the hardscape, electrical, and the wood patio cover--we also had him paint the condo fences and the cover the same green color, for a tropical feel."

"Hats: John likes to collect things from travels around the world so I added the hats to the outdoor decor."

"View from the sitting area. All the patio furniture is rehabbed, painted and refinished to save money and landfill waste. And for privacy (there is an apartment building next to our house) and additional shade, we hung simple bamboo roll-up blinds from Osh."

"Fish pond: the pot was bought from Jackelope Pottery, a great resource for fountains, ceramics, outdoor pottery in North Hollywood, and is filled with water hyacinths, goldfish and a trickling fountain."

"John's collection of Aztec stonework souvenirs, next to huge cherry tomato plant."

Django approves!

"We love hanging out in the patio, which we also made rain-proof. The clear overhead UV panels protect the patio area, especially nice when it rains---we can be outdoors all the time. We love seeing our goldfish grow and swim in the pond. It all feels very 'mini tropical resort' with a bit of tiki kitsch thrown in--and we thought the patio would never take shape, if you saw it before. Our dogs, Sophia and Django, love the yard too."

Ok, I realize this post is about the patio, but could Heseon and John pretty please share the name/brand of the blue in the hallway?

Looks great!
How did you seal the pot to turn it into a fountain? We've been unsuccessful it our attempts to turn a beautiful pot into a fountain - the interior isn't glazed so it is too porous and the water just seeps through losing on inch or three overnight.
We've tried the Thompson's water seal and one or 2 other products- any suggestions?

mjoe---that's our 'pool' room since there wasn't space for one. we found the paint at lowe's (http://lowes.com), the paint is ultra premium interior semi gloss called 'sea sparkle' no. 5003-7B, by valspar paints. http://valspar.com and look it up here:

fish_h20:
the pot we found was glazed both inside and out. to plug up the drainage hole, the folks at jackalope http://jackalope epoxied it, let it cure, and we picked it up the next day. it's been water-tight with no problems. they recommend using any clear silicone (the tube kind at the hardware store) for that. for sealing pots, here's a tip i found online about waterproofing:
