Our Neighbor, Our Garden

atla-050508-garden01.jpgWe love a garden but we don’t have a green thumb. We’re envious of people who do and grateful that one of them is our neighbor. Over the years, he’s turned our common courtyard, formerly landscaped with dead ivy, into a lush and colourful space. Influenced by both classic Los Angeles gardens and those he visits on his frequent trips to visit friends and family in Italy, it's a constantly changing landscape. New plants, flowers, small sculptures and unique pots arrive, move, depart, return. It's a jumbled, beautiful feast for the eye. More pictures after the jump...

Love the Bougainvillea! Mine used to look like that, before the new re-stucco job. How nice it must be to have coffee or a cocktail out in your community garden.

Wow, I've been in Chicago too long, which is gorgeous in a different way and underrated. But in the city at least, gardens like this are uncommon.

I'm more interior than exterior and more ac than breeze, but a setting like this could change my mind.

It's not hard to get a green thumb. You can take classes given by LA County extension and learn the basics all the way up to becoming a master gardener.

You are so lucky to have a neighbor that cares about the open space between the two of you! I have a balcony and so does my neighbor opposite me. I keep green and flowering plants outside so I can enjoy them and also hopefully beautify the building. My neighbor, on the other hand, bought plants last May, stuck them out on her balcony still in the plastic trays from the garden center. She never watered them once and now a year later the dead plants in their plastic trays are still scattered around! If I had access to her space I'd at least toss the trash. She gets a view of my lush balcony garden and I have to look at hers.
