Cult of Personality: Toilet Decor
Featured on The Selby

091009_bathdecorWar.jpgAs a decor blog, it's a lot easier than you might think to lose sight of what's "real" and what's...well, hmm..."relatable"? You see, when we research ideas to write posts about, we'll spend hours trying to find a new angle to, say, bathrooms; and we'll get caught up in a trail of concept toilets or gold-plated sinks that spout Hawaiian punch or whatever. Not to say that these ideas aren't great, but...

...sometimes the best inspirations come from real homes--especially when the people who live there have a great sense of humor.

To that end, we compiled a few of our favorite photos from The Selby featuring bathroom decor. Specifically, what people put on top of or around their toilet tank. Check it out:

091009_bathdecorBlue.jpgThis toilet tank is covered in a flower print and the entire bathroom has a lovely bird motif. On top of the tank are few magazines with two owl bookends.

091009_bathdecorDaff.jpgA more conventional toilet vignette; classy, even: Daffodils and Chanel No. 5

091009_bathdecorDarth.jpgHeh. "You don't know the power of the dark side!"

091009_bathdecorGold.jpgEvery throne needs a bit of gold...even if it's molded plastic with glitter...?

091009_bathdecorMark.jpgPerhaps my favorite toilet tank topper yet: Mark the Cobra Snake's vintage gasoline tank.

So: What's on your toilet tank?

Love these bathrooms. I myself plastered my powder room with butterfly pics I found at the Chatachuk Market in Thailand.

Check it out!

Enjoy....

I have a Godzilla-themed guest bathroom; lots of Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Gidarah figurines. I should send in pics.

Lovin' the bird theme! Looks like it all was done for about $6.50 at a local thrift store! Sometimes entire collections of things (such as owls) get donated so you hardly need to shop around.

Lovely pics, and the toilet roll installation one is pure genius!

When I was a kid, a family friend had old New Yorkers covers wallpapered over their bathroom. My mom wallpapered maps, quotes, and cute postcards all over our bathrooms... I don't recommend this in a room with a shower, because the moisture made them peel off, but I definitely absorbed info on the map pasted in front of the toilet!

My own right now is boring-- a salt-rock candle holder and a box of matches. I might go more crazy once we move into a place we own!

I love the toilet roll installation!

The ones that have clutter near the toilet or wall hangings down low - I only have one word of caution if there are any men in your household: splatter.

Does anyone have good ideas for stuff that works with the moisture? We have a little bathroom and one small window, so I'm afraid anything paper would come off or (worse) get moldy.

mayamolly, did they live outside of Boston? I had the same friends. It was a really fun powder room.

The bird-room is really striking -- love the birdcage up top the most.

I like my bathroom sleek without much stuff showing. So the only thing I have on top is a very hard Sudoku book. Uh....it takes a long while to go through the whole book, so it's been there for 6 months or so....

Other than that, I do like the gold glitter toilet seat - THAT is a good sense of humor! The hot pink birdcage rocks....this whole pic reminds of Birdcage the movie.

Also love that one of the Chanel caps is askew...slight imperfection in an otherwise perfectly staged toilet tank.

I feel the books will drop into the bowl in the 1st pic...kinda scary.

when i was growing up, my parents had a HUGE pop-art poster of napoleon bonapart hanging over the toilet. it scared the poo out of me every time i went in the room. an effective characteristic.

ok, why do I like the toilet roll "installation"? Alas, I do...

We have a giant microbe E. coli sitting on our cabinet staring down our guests as they use the facilites... so I cannot lie and say I have no idea why that person has darth toilet in their bathroom....

humor in unexpected places... it's a good thing.

ChryssF, the Godzilla themed bathroom sounds fantastic. I'm a big Kaiju fan, love to see how folks apply that to their digs. 8^)

I don't have pictures, but I have a collection of pictures of bathtubs hanging in mine (and I only have a shower)...I love picking them up at fleamarkets and vintage shops.

Squeaky - my bathroom (and the bathrooms in numerous places I've lived) have been the same. If you hang tightly framed pictures get the back sealed, or laminate what you want to hang. Just understand that there's a risk it WILL get ruined. Or, use a small fan as part of your decor.

Those are some pretty crazy bathrooms. That's one room you can get really creative with...especially powder rooms. My sister has a major 'rubber ducky' theme going on in her bathroom. A little over the top, but hey....why not?

My favourite-ever bathroom was the one I had in my mid-twenties.

I painted the walls blue, put Astroturf on the floor and superglued fake sunflowers and plastic lizards everywhere.

'Twas fab. Astroturf is slippery when wet but the effect was well worth exercising a bit of caution when getting out of the shower.

We have a small replica of The Thinker on our toilet tank, cause it looks like he's sitting on a toilet... :)
