Matt's DIY Master Bath Vanity Project

Matt of Rancho Rehab emailed us his most recent home improvement project and it's definitely an impressive display of DIY skills: he designed and fabricated his own bathroom vanity to fit a sink ordered from eBay using 3/4" birch plywood, IKEA legs and topped with a stylish modern faucet from Hansgrohe. This was Matt's test run in preparation for a kitchen cabinetry upgrade, but it's very impressive in itself with some notable tips about how to attain an warm-aged patina to cabinetry noted below...

Matt even shares some tips about finishing cabinetry with an aged lacquer appearance on birch plywood:

Now we finish. I've been working on replicating the look of aged lacquer on birch plywood. I've tried a few different things, tung oil, shellac, stains. Tung oil is okay, but seems to work better on solid woods where it can really soak in deeply. Shellac is nice, but a bit too orange. Stains have the same issue as tung oil, in that they just don't seem to penetrate or have enough effect. This time I used Minwax's Polyshades in Pecan, satin. My theory is that most of that warm amber glow on the vintage cabinetry I've seen in the neighborhood is the lacquer yellowing, not a stain or the color of the wood per say. This stuff actually has the color in the polyurethane, so the color sits on top of the wood. I like the way this took and will probably do the same thing again next time.

Matt has more photos and details about his project over at Our Cliff Mat Rancho Rehab for you to ooh and ahh over. Great job and we can't wait for the kitchen makeover (we're also in envy mode of his workshop space/tools).

I love that mirror! Reminds me of my student days in Sweden...if I were to look for such a mirror on ebay/craigslist what would be the correct search term? Beautiful vanity !!!

Love this! Beautiful job - the wood finishing R&D you did is a great tip and I'm going to keep it in my "for future reference" file.

I wish I had the skills and patience to build my own vanity. I can see why people DIY things but I'm happy with my Bathroom Vanity.

This is very neat and nice job, especially considering it's done from scratch. Though, this project is for pretty advanced DIYers, so I want to suggest another approach like using of already made piece of furniture. You need just add sink, faucet and drain assembly. There are article with pictures to illustrate one of my projects. Yet, the ultra-modern style may accommodate buffets from IKEA, they are very good value.
