Repurpose: Using Curtains in The Bathroom

031709studio-05.jpgAT has posted about shower curtains in the living room but this is our first time seeing a window covering used as a shower curtain...

We think using regular curtains in the shower is a great idea--especially if you need a custom size for your non-traditional shower. And with vinyl shower curtains never having quite enough coziness for our taste, fabric window coverings are a great solution. All you'll need are clip rings from IKEA or Target to hang your new shower curtain.

Have you used a window covering as a shower curtain before? What were your reasons (needed something custom, wanted more options)?

I had two pairs of vintage barkcloth curtains that I could not use in my new place. I had them sewn together, and had button holes put in the top part. They are now my shower curtains.

this seems like the most obvious idea in the world now, but somehow I'd never considered it before! I'll definitely keep it in mind when I get bored of the (surprisingly tasteful) $5 crepe shower curtain I bought when I was in school.

I've always used real curtains, with a clear liner to avoid mold. And I use vintage plates for soap dishes. Why be limited to the bath section of a box store?

My old condo was handicap accessible, so it had an extra long shower area with a seat in it. I couldn't find a regular shower curtain that would cover the whole area, so I bought window panels off Smart Bargains. It looked so good - wish I had a picture. I hung them much higher than a regular shower curtain would go, and it looked very luxurious.

I use window curtains as shower curtains all. the. time. I feel like shower curtains look too... shower curtain-y? I like the idea of using richer-than-expected fabrics in the bathroom.

I will hang a clear vinyl shower curtain off the shower rod, to protect the window curtain from splashing. To hang the window curtain, I've used either one of those spring-loaded tension bars or the funky cable curtain-hanging contraption from IKEA.

P.S. Kinda-ditto to Lisa in Montreal - I use my pottery projects gone awry as my soap dishes in my shower. I have one large cylinder that turned out kind of ugly, and it holds all my shampoo and bodywash bottles and such.

I made a curtain and installed track for my shower curtain because I wanted it to go floor to ceiling.

This "light bulb" moment of realizing you can use things for other than their intended purpose reminds me of the time it occurred to me to use tall Ikea kitchen cabinets to create built in storage for my bedroom. I wandered past the Ikea kitchens section numerous times, always wishing they had bedroom storage as nice and as varied and as flexible as the kitchen cabinets.

And then one day, the light bulb went on....
