I had seen an earlier posting on AT about the Tate bed at Crate and Barrel. I loved the upholstery on the bed. It was both sophisticated and sleek, and I really wanted to capture that look. However, I definitely don't have the $1200 to splurge on a bed. Essentially I upholstered the bed by using 3 inch foam padding and a beige microsuede fabric to achieve the upholstered look. First I cut the foam to size and glued each piece to the metal bed frame using spray adhesive. To create the tufted headboard, I sewed seams in a grid pattern. Using a button making kit, I made buttons from the same fabric. To create the tufted effect, I sewed each button onto the headboard, pulling it tightly to the back of the foam padding to create that depression. The side rails and footboard were upholstered as well.
My closet doors hacked to create a more modern look reminiscent of japanese shoji screens. I hated the 80's look of my mirrored sliding doors. I really wanted the look of Japanese shoji screens but there were no affordable options. Basically I flipped the mirrored doors around and glued plexi glass onto the back. I used a frosting sheet to get the frosted glass look. Finally I used precut wood molding which were stained black and glued onto the plexi glass to create the grids.
To accessorized with textiles form Target and Ikea, and vintage pieces like a Plycraft Eames style lounge chair and Eileen Gray side table.
Thanks Paul! If you have photos of your bedroom you would like to share with us you can do so by tagging your flickr images with "apartmenttherapyla" or email us! The first 30 beautiful bedrooms that are shown across all the AT sites will receive an AT book or T-shirt as a thank you.
Love it!! Paul can you tell me the paint color?
The paint is by Behr and the color is called Landmark brown on the accent wall. The other walls were painted in a pale grey color of which I can't recall the name, but also by Behr.
Wow--creative and resourceful! The room is beautiful Thanks for sharing.
Kudos on the bed; you did a nice job (wish I had your talent and patience!). Very peaceful looking room; I love the paint color.
You made your own buttons! Amazing.
My favorite are the shoji doors. What a resourceful and creative way to change the mirror doors into something more soothing.
One suggestion:
If you don't need all of those books and magazines above your desk, cull whatever you no longer need/use in order to declutter the wall shelves above your desk. If you can't bear to part with any of those magazines, then consider buying those standup magazine boxes/holders where your magazines will still be organized and stored but kept out of sight.
