If you're getting down, don't go cheap. It's won't last and it's unsustainable. The best down comes from Europe or Canada. If the product is not certified as Canadian or European raised down then the down is from China and if a lower quality. Baffle-box construction is also a must ("box-stitched" is not the same). Companies should also provide you with information about the loft. The higher the loft, the more air between the bits of down and the better the performance.

We have a 'Ultra-light' down duvet for summer from a Canadian company called St. Geneve. (We have a winter weight one too as well as pillows and a featherbead). The down is from Canadian Hutterite colonies and is treated to be hypoallergenic. All our bedding has held up very well but just in case they are covered under warranty as well. I would definitely recommend St. Geneve to anyone interested in upgrading their bedding.

Man...I'd love for someone to come up with a comforter that would work during the summer in LA. But even a light quilt can be too much between August and October. I feel like the comforter would have to actually pull heat AWAY from my body to be remotely cool enough. But I love sleeping with that heavier weight.

Anyone using a comforter in 65-70 degree heat?

UO sells nice summer weight light quilts, but why would you want such a thing to sleep with?

Lands End also sell a variety of comforters in different weights - even a silk-filled comforter for those with allergies or folks who just don't like to deal with the ocassional feather coming out.

I sleep with a comforter all year - on the few nights when it's too hot I can just kick it off, but I like the weight and in SF I need the warmth, especially in our "summer".

mr. O - I live in a similar climate and use the Company Store St. Tropez comforter above (the dark blue one). We got the version that wasn't down, though. On the warmest nights I start out without the comforter but I always end up underneath it by morning. I think it's great but my boyfriend always says it's too "flat".

I love the weight of my down comforter all year round. I love that it's squishy and heavy. I want one with that same feeling but cool enough for summer. Is there a perfect solution out there? I can't sleep with just a sheet even if it's really hot.

@bepsf: If I was lucky enough to be living in the Bay Area, I'd be rocking my favorite comforter year round! Just one more benefit. Sigh...

@sagekitten: That's my worry, that the "summer weight" comforters are too flat to have the weight I'm looking for.

@Laura: You and I are on the same quest. Sometimes I wonder if a perforated/mesh cover would be the ideal solution. But I'm very far from being knowledgeable in this field.

We use the duvet cover without the duvet during the summer. When it comes to actually sleeping I usually only have a sheet on me no matter the season. Damned memory foam is too hot but so comfy!
