Design Duo Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe are behind this month's Domino feature on Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo's LA home and were Domino's top pick for designers to watch in 2008. Their brand of warm minimalism with a bit of Parisian flea market bohemian thrown in is practical, down to earth and makes us jealous. So we were really excited to have them share their tips for what makes a great bedroom, well, great.
• Keep it clean & simple. The bedroom is for sleeping and having lots of clutter becomes disturbing awake and asleep. Get rid of any clutter and non-essential items by stashing them away and out of sight.
• Stay Warm. Having nice bedding can make all the difference in the way you sleep. 100% cotton or Linen sheets are essential. A nice 100% down duvet with a pretty duvet cover is an enticing way to get one into bed, Add cotton blanket for those cold winter nights. www.nickeykehoe.com for great Matteo bedding and linens
• Good pillows. Are you sleeping on pillows that are 5 years old? Replace them and see how much better you sleep tonight.
• Pictures of friends & family. Having photos of loved ones around are a great addition to the décor of the room as well as reminding you how lucky you are each and every night.
• Soothing color. The bedroom should be a soothing place. Painting your room a mellow, light color will make you feel instantly relaxed when you walk in the room
• Remove the TV. Studies show that people who have a TV the bedroom can have a more restless nights sleep.
• Lighting. Remove any overhead lights and use ambient table lamps to give the room more a more relaxing, warm feeling.
• Window coverings. Adding some type of blackout shades or heavy drapery to the windows will promote a better night’s sleep.
• A new mattress. Nothing can change the quality of your sleep like a new mattress. Ditch that old, lumpy mattress for a new (preferably no foam) mattress. Try McRoskey.
• A nice headboard. An upholstered headboard is a good way to create a focal point to your room.
Thanks Todd and Amy!

Why are they against foam mattresses?

That piece at the end of the bed needs to go elsewhere.

NO MCM???

No pictures of friends and family in the bedroom.
It kills the moment when you're in the middle of 'something' and your eyes land on the picture of your parents sitting on your dresser.

What is the chest at the end of the bed? I love it.

I definitely agree with racheloncegentry about no photos. Your bedroom should be your own private space, photos go on the fridge at my house.

I agree with racheloncegentry and saturday. The only photos in my bedroom are of my husband and me. I had a picture of my toddler in there for about a day, but when my eyes landed on it at the wrong moment, it, well...you get the idea.

Love the headboard in this shot. Anyone know where it is from (or if it's custom-made)?

Loving that bed - The side tables and lamps, not so much...

I LOVE THAT ROOM.

I think that shot is from their store, so if you want the headboard or the chest you should contact them.

polyurethane foam mattresses are bad for the environment and for your back.
100% natural latex foam, however, is fine. But expensive. Still, it can last 20 years and doesn't need flipping.

Not exactly 'minimal'. And yes, NO pictures of family. Eww. Eww. Eww.
We've got a truly minimal bedroom at home (not entirely on purpose) Neither one of us has a lot of bedroom furniture - so all of the clothes are stored in closets. We have just a bed, a pair of nightstands, a rug, and a chair (for tossing clothes over at night). It's amazing how well the simplicity works. At night there isn't anything to distract us as we drift off to sleep, and once we're out of bed in the morning we're out of the bedroom until the evening. All the rest of our living is done IN the house!

I agree with having pictures of family in the bedroom. I have them placed where I see them while choosing accessories in the morning and I like the array of friendly faces at the start of each workday. None are visible from the bed.
I really need to clear out clutter, I know there are a few bags full of clothes I never wear anymore and it does distract me when I'm getting ready for bed.

Where can I find the art behind the headboard?

I'm desperate to find a lower priced version of the custom bedside table that Nickey Kehoe did for the Ruffalo's bedroom featured in Domino. You can see the table (it's blue) here (it takes a second to get to the right picture, so be patient...): http://www.casasugar.com/home?page=307#post_2675032. Any brilliant ideas?
