apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Eating in Bed

12309-eating.jpgEven if we hadn't had surgery the other day, causing us to spend as many waking hours in bed as possible, we still would find as many excuses as we could for eating breakfast there (not to mention dinner and late night snacks). Especially on lazy weekend mornings when there's nothing on the calendar until the afternoon, eating in bed feels like the easiest and most luxurious indulgence invented. There's something about getting back into bed with a fresh mug of tea and a plateful of scrambled eggs that makes the world seem like a much better place...

If you're considering a meal in bed, stay away from things that need knives, things that crumble or those that are very messy. Best: egg dishes, sticky pastas, chunky soups. Here are some breakfast options you might try from our sister site, the Kitchn. Of course, if you can get someone else to do the cooking...well, so much the better:

Hope you recover well and quickly, Abby.

(Also, I know other readers have commented about the "we" v. "I" thing on AT, but the above made me laugh. "We" had surgery makes me imagine a groups of Apartment Therapy writers all lined up in a hospital for some undetermined surgical procedure. Maybe some new design gene has been genetically engineered and AT bloggers are the first to test it out. AT-meets-sci-fi.)

Anyway, get well soon.

Agree. AT is great on interior design, not-so-great on "grammatical design," if you will.

Back to the topic at hand, not a big fan of eating in bed. It makes my bed feel dirty, for some reason. Eating on the couch, however....my favorite spot!

P.S. Although if i had a tray like that served to me for breakfast, i would eat it wherever i could!

We don't want roaches in our bed.

I can't stand eating anything requiring more than one bite in bed. I don't like when it inevitably gets on your fingers and you have to figure out a way to get out without touching anything! I do like to eat on the couch though.

Gasp! No food, EVER, in the bedroom! Especially if you live in an apartment building/complex... you're just asking for roaches/mice then!!

even better if someone else is cleaning up

yes on the 'we' thing in this case. maybe the AT style book is being followed a bit to the letter?

jplee - I laughed at the 'we' usage here too. I was picturing conjoined twins...

At a resort where it's not my bed and there's daily maid service, or while convalescing and there's no choice, eating in bed would be acceptable. But I don't even want to think about crumbs, sticky jam, coffee, or worse possibly being spilled on my own bed. I'm no clean freak or germophobe, but food and beds seems like a risky combination to me.

Ewww...eating in bed is nasty and lazy. I have a dear friend who is obese and it always grosses me out that she always has crackers, cookies and chocolate in her bedside table. She's a dear, sweet, brilliant woman but her whole eating in bed thing is so disgusting.

My amazement never ceases at the neuroses ATers have.

I would love to have breakfast served to me in bed. (Hey, honey...?) Short of having surgery myself (ourself?) I don't see it happening anytime soon. Since I'm the one who makes breakfast, I'm usually pretty wide awake by the time it's finished, and then there's not much of a point.

Hope you feel better soon, Abby.

But what about the birthday breakfast in bed? I think it is a really fun thing to do for your sig-other. It is a great motivator to changing the sheets too!

Not in bed but the couch is definitely our second table (sometimes, and I am ashamed, yes, the couch becomes the kitchen table).

...Which is absolutely a bad idea, since we purchased a white couch... (Beginners’ mistake *sigh*) We then learned the value of a good couch blanket.

I love having coffee in bed, but I prefer not to eat in bed if I'm not sick. I always feel like there are crumbs later. Oatmeal in bed might be ok, though. It is a pretty tidy meal.

m, I don't think eating in bed is ideal, either, but if you have roaches, I doubt they are going to circumvent the bed.

I love breakfast in bed, but only if I'm being served. What's the point of getting back in bed after I've gotten up and made breakfast?

I do love to drink in bed though.

Didn't we just have this post like a month ago? Chunky soup in bed? Don't sneeze.

Gross. Coffee, ok. Food. No. For some reason, roaches or no roaches, food just seems wrong in bed. I don't have a lot of other issues - I wear my shoes in the house. *gasp* I use the same sponge for days. I sleep on the same pillows for months at a time without washing them. But food in bed - yuck.

Eat in bed - yes. A small, free luxury.

Feel better soon!

I eat in bed from time to time. I don't feel bad about snacking if I'm reading or something. If any crumbs fall, I have a handy dog vacuum to clean it up.

Sputnik: haha, me too. My dog knows what's up if I'm headed to bed with a croissant.
Eating in bed's nice, on occasion. And frankly, I do lots of things in my bed (using the computer, knitting, watching a movie on the laptop, cuddling with the basenji dog, reading, and last but not least things I'm only prepared to vaguely allude to in a public forum), so it doesn't seem odd to eat there. I've also never had a problem with pests anywhere in my house, obesity and/or laziness (I wouldn't want to be friends with you, btw, Monica), or spills.

When I rarely can, I love eating in bed especially when its sunny and pretty in the morning.... plus it's free and starts my day off on a good note. I do have to limit the kinds of food because I REFUSE to make my bedding stained, however.

Can't stand eating in bed or outdoors, especially picnics! I do eat at the sofa, but I need a table for most kinds of food. Even then, I can be messy! But I can't get comfortable at picnics, when wind and sand are blowing, or when trying to keep myself and my bedding clean. Your mileage may vary, but it's not for me.

Where I come from "Polenta for Breakfast" is not a gourmet indulgence reserved for breakfast in bed. It's called "grits" and it's a staple for people who grew up poor in the South.

My bedroom is completely food free. Sometimes I have glass of water by.... that's all. I guess in some very special situation I can imagine eating in bed, but even when I am sick I prefer to get up and eat by the table. I would be so stressed all the time that something falls, that there are crumbs and what not!

Grits! I was thinking the same thing, HillE. It seems to be a breakfast novelty for folks NOT from the South. Aside, coffee, tea, cocoa, and water in bed is fine. The design of my bed is not conducive to eating in it, however.

I've never been inclined to eat in the bedroom at all.... though I suppose if I were recovering from surgery I would.

Hope all is going well with your recovery.

Once in a while I'll do breakfast in bed, but nothing is more delicious than a champagne or prosecco cocktail in bed before brunch!

Speedy recovery :)
