Making Up Your Bed: Change Your Bed Style, Change Your Look

12809-bedstyle01.jpgWe've discussed how changing your bedding can change your look. But, you can also change your bedroom's look by changing the way you make up your bed and you won't have to spend a single cent...

12809-bedstyle02.jpgOur basic bedding consists of a duvet with a cover, a bottom sheet and two pillows, which makes making the bed in the morning a literal snap (of the wrists -- to shake out the duvet, another to shake out the pillows). But, depending on the season and our mood, we like to mix it up:

  • Plump up your sleeping pillows and settle your duvet over your entire bed, as in the opening shot from Sam's Sydney Simplicity and you've got a classic casual and inviting look to your bed that showcases a beautiful duvet. Feel free to add a couple of colourful toss pillows.
  • For a change of pace, fold your duvet back on itself and prop up your sleeping pillows. This is the look seen in Kelly's Modern Craftsman and is our current favorite way of dressing our bed. Clean, modern and easy to make, it's a great way to show off a patterned bottom sheet. We especially like this look if you're partial to pillows and it's great in warm weather. Throw a blanket over the duvet pile if you're so inclined.

Where to buy the pedestal near the bed? I always see them in magazines but rarely in stores (unless they are super expensive stores). LA resources for pedestals?

I really like the idea of changing the bed style. I am usually not that creative with setting my bedding but this sounds very simple :-)

The pedestal looks like an Eames walnut stool.
They are pretty but tend to be super pricey.

My duvet is reversible -- neutral print on one side, mid-toned solid color on the other. I keep it accordian folded at the end of the bed so it's easy to pull up if I get cold. In the summer, the down filler comes out.

There's a practical reason for having a top sheet - keeping the duvet cover clean. For anyone opting to eliminate the top sheet and just use a duvet, I recommend bathing at night. If not, you'll be washing the cover a lot. So, if AT is trying to emulate the German practice of eliminating the top sheet, AT might also consider emulating the German practice of bathing at night before bed.

I love this look! My daughter is very into this style right now and she has the same bed from Ikea.

abbiegirl, I was wondering about the top sheet too. I prefer to have one.
