From last friday's post it seems we're split on the dark walls thing. But more and more we're seeing moodier rooms with more grey and black seeping in, especially in the bedroom. When we found this image from Dwell Studio we thought it was the perfect example of dark done well: not so dark it's like a tomb, and with light graphic bedding and a light lampshade to balance what could become somber. So we roundedup some other bedrooms that seek to balance dark and light. What do you think?

The first bedroom is elegant and stunning, but personally I need lots of natural light and light colors in the bedroom, they fill me up with energy and make me want to jump out of bed in the morning.

I used to be a light and bright person, but my last bedroom was painted "loft" a grey from ralph lauren...and I loved it. We're going to paint the new bedroom the same color, and add one wall in an even darker grey shade behind the bed...all in a north facing room. We don't close our blinds though, living up high, so we get all the northern light we need streaming in. Soon it will actually be bright when I wake up too....

I am still growing accustomed to the grayness of Seattle, so gray-tones are not an option for me. When I moved into my house 2 years ago, I painted the bedroom a very warm and cozy chocolate brown. At first, everybody told me it was way too dark, but once it was all pulled together (with a creamy white trim, woolly cream rug and pops of green, pink and blue) everybody now agrees it is so cozy! The room is now my guest room and I have one guest who painted her own room the same color because she found the room so restful!

I painted one wall Blue Echo after seeing it on another AT posting. I love dark shades - when there are a lot of lighter elements in the room, it doesn't overwhelm as much. I find them very relaxing and conducive to sleep and relaxing. I am also very light sensitive at night, so it helps me sleep.

That black bedroom is to die for! I also really like the shadow cast on the wall by that lamp in the second pic (Sherry and Miguel's pic).

I had a dark room and finally felt so oppressed by it that I painted it light again. I think a dark room would work in a *big* space with lots of natural light. My room faces north, so natural light was limited.
I did have a southern facing room painted dark teal green many years ago. The color was always great in that space. Never like a black hole.

I think it depends on how you use the room. If you spend a lot of time in there in the morning or during the day (as one does with apartment shares), the dark could be oppressive. But if it's only for nighttime, ooh la la.

Back in college i took some Ralph Lauren paint buckets home, the color was this deep rich dark blue. My room at my parents house got full sun light all the time and when I painted the room to the gasps of my parents and grandmother and other family members who thought i was crazy at the time, now all find the room to be very appealing. It helps that the room has warm light honey colored wood and silver accents to go with along with deep dark red bedspread. It is definitely my sanctuary.
Now I have my own studio that i rent out and am contemplating doing the dark moody bachelor type environment, will see how that all comes together.

Our bedroom is Benjamin Moore's Toasty (dark brown). The room is on the southeast corner and gets lots of sunlight in the morning. With beige and pale blue bedding to balance the dark walls, the room is really peaceful and warm feeling.

I agree with mns2000 they all look elegant but I really need light and bright in the morning. In fact I just did a post about the same thing http://www.incrediblejoy.co.uk/

I love dark colors in the bedroom. Ours is painted a medium grey, and the living room has a couple walls painted charcoal. I don't find it oppressive at all, even winter - it's cozy, sophisticated and comforting.

Like some others, I'm seriously contemplating brown walls in the bedroom. Dark, but warm, and keeping the color scheme natural by including lots of green and some blue.

We painted a small back bedroom with Martha Stewart "Birdhouse"--it turned out to be more blue when we were expecting green and it is very dark, but we love it with the bright white trim and light birch wooden furniture in the room. It is a smashing accent against the warm wooden floors as well. We love it.

I just got DwellStudio bedding and it was a great decision! Not only is it great quality, and stylish, but it also classies up my bedroom as well. I leaned towards them when it came to bedding mainly because all of their bedding looked great in all sorts of interiors and their bedding always looks great in their ads. Now, on topic, I think dark bedrooms are fine but natural light and a few bright pops of color would be necessary for me.

my problem is difficulty falling asleep, and migraines. having a dark, soothing, 'womb-like' room helps helps... dark gray all the way for me. and black-out lining on drapes. and lots of textiles - like rugs, drapes, lush bedding and pillows and throws - to deaden sound. aaahhhhh

I just painted my bedroom the almost identical colour to the first one, and I absolutely love it! It had been a lighter green, but I wanted it to feel smaller, cozier, and that's exactly the effect I've attained. It also makes emphasizes the wide white molding, especially around the window. To keep it from looking drab, I have white dressers and a white bedspread, and I find the white ceiling helps with that too. I also found that having dark colours act as a relatively neutral background, similar to a white or slightly off-white would. It'd be especially neat to mix that concept throughout an entire house.

Thank you for this post! I am currently working on a dark bedroom... just moved in with my sweetie who likes dark blues & dark wood furniture. Working on balancing with light accents. These pics are great inspiration.

A dar womb-like bedroom is incredibly cozy at night, especially during winter. But they feel wrong in the morning, when you need something to help give you the energy to leap out of bed and seize the day... (although one trick I have found is to have an incredibly hard uncomfortable mattress, which makes lingering in bed impossible).
Really love the picture out of Living Etc. -- the 2nd from the bottom. The open door to the light-filled white bathroom might make it work in the mornings, especially if it has an eastern exposure.
No way could I talk my husband into it though.
