apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Bin Step by Hector Serrano Studio

082608binstep.jpgFrom the designer who brought us the Dress For Dinner Napkins comes a dual use item we actually see ourselves using around the kitchen where we've got plenty of hard to reach storaged away items (because in a small space, using the vertical is essential), while also providing an additional receptacle for trash...

The Bin Step is a design we hope to see at our local Target or Container Store in the near future, since it hits both marks of everyday utility and small footprint, two characteristics we expect for anything new added to our studio apartment where space is at a premium. Right now we have to haul out a slim, but tall, step ladder to reach our cookbooks and the KitchenAid mixer, so something like the Bin Step would be a useful inbetween option when we just need a couple steps of additional reach while also providing somewhere we could either use for storage/waste. Simple idea, simple execution, but simply desirable!

Only worry is that it might be difficult to get a trash bag out since the bottom is wider than the top.

The website doesn't indicate, but I would hope that the space inside the step is lined in some way thereby eliminating the wide/narrow problem.

A good idea. Needs tinkering to be better. Maybe it has a slim pail liner.

LOVE IT!!!!! I would just want it to be big enough to handle all my kitchen trash. I need one that's about 18 - 20" high - but not taller - wider than taller would be best. I hope I hope I can find them in stores soon!

I have a small kitchen with no corner for tucking a trash container out of the way. My solution is to use a wood stool to double as a step, and to hide my lined trash container hidden inside the cabinet under the sink.

I'd use this in my pantry where I also keep the cat litter box. I could just pop the litter bags in this bin and also reach the top shelves in the pantry.
