apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Blogging...One Room Living on Small Space Style

012009_canKitch00.jpgWe remembered seeing this studio apartment on HGTV a few years ago, so when we spotted these scans on Lisa's blog Small Space Style, we had to share. Back in 2003, Canadian Style at Home magazine featured this 400 square foot studio that made one room living seem not only doable, but also done in a comfortable style that doesn't feel claustrophobic. More photos of the space along with the floorplan after the jump...

The hallway features what looks like an Ikea cabinet with frosted glass doors, to hold everything from magazines to wine glasses.

At one end of the studio is the dining area with a small round table and two chairs. Tucked away in an armoire is a toaster oven and more glasses and coffee cups for easy access. A curtain is tacked to the bottom half of the armoire, perfect to hide snacks or cleaning supplies.

Next to the dining area is the living area with a small couch, two wicker footstools in lieu of a traditional coffee table. A large bookcase/entertainment center can be hidden thanks to the curtain rod attached to the wall.

On the other side of the entertainment center is the bedroom. We love the linen tacked to the back, and the rustic shutters that run the length of the studio to hide the bedroom and study areas. A white floating Ikea Lack shelf with cabinet lights installed underneath provides light for bedtime reading.

At the foot of the bed: a small study area. More floating shelves hold documents in baskets, a printer, and a few books.

I remember this issue and wish I was not so quick to recycle magazines. I live in a small place (and now I keep all the small space issues). It is so nicely done.

I remember buying this issue in Canada a few years ago. I hung onto it for a while - not sure if I still have it.

I'm always amazed when people can do so much with such a small space. This is very well done.

I love it when the floorplans are included. It gives such a better sense of how they have maximized the space.

One room living is a breeze in 400 sqft. That's as big or bigger than my current 1.5 bedroom railroad, and bigger than my previous 1 bedroom here in Brooklyn. They essentially had a nice open space within which they could create their own "rooms." Mind you, I do like what they did, but it's good to keep in mind that 400sqft is a might spacious studio to work with.

I've never seen a desk that shape, but anything else wouldn't fit the space. Wonder where they found it? It is a perfect choice!

Spooky - just two days ago, I pulled this clipping out of my decorating file and discarded it!

I saw the first pic and started salivating because I thought it was the cover of what could only be a great new book :) Gorgeous pics regardless. I so crave the coziness spaces like this appear to have, but fear my own tiny would just feel cluttered.

I *love* Canadian House & Home. Their Small Space issue is my all-time fav.
It is Peter Fallico's "Home to Stay" and "Home to Go", and now his new "Home to Flip"-- awesome ideas

Does anyone know what the industrial-looking desk lamp is named/found/made? I just love the look of it.

Winterwold:

I purchased my lamp identical to that one at Target three weeks ago.

Thanks Gazpacho! I'll use your link to try to find out if any more stores have them since I live in Sweden and there are no Target stores here.
