When you're entertaining outdoors, it's always handy to have an extra area to put your extra dishes, condiments, drinks, etc... The July 2008 Living Etc. had this good suggestion- use a "baker's rack" or metal shelving to hold the goods. It also simplifies the need to be running back and forth from the kitchen to the outside, allowing you to spend more time with your guests...

If your rack has widely spaced slatted bars as shelves, you could get some plexi glass cut to size. It will keep the open feel, but also prevent things from falling through. Does anyone have anything like this in their yard?

fantastic idea... i would actually use this in a sunny spot to maximize on my limited container gardening space in the back yard.

i've used a super-cheap shelf (thank you, dollar store) for years as an all-purpose home for potted plants, gardening tools, shoes, citronella candles, and the like. and i just use thrift store trays or repurposed flower pots to hold the small, loose things.

whether on a fire escape or a porch, i've had one in every home i've had since college and can't imagine life without it. (but then again, i can't imagine entertaining outdoors often enough to make it worth the use in the picture.)
