Painting the Ceiling Black?
In Style June 2008

061208miley.jpgIt was featured in a Fall Colors Contest entry a while back, and just yesterday, we noticed it in the dressing room of the home of Miley Cyrus that currently is in the latest In-Style magazine (above)... black painted ceilings...

We've seen that many retail shops paint their ceilings black, especially if they have exposed air ducts, etc... Interesting to note that in the Miley Cyrus room, they kept the light fixture black as well... Have any of you painted your ceiling black or a very dark color? Do you think it makes the room feel taller or does it lower the ceiling? Does it feel visually heavy or does it kind of make the ceiling visually "disappear"?

OMG, what a nightmare!!! Perfect for a teenager. God Bless her. I hope she keeps a picture of this, so that later she can smile amused at her wonderful crazy youth.

Fun if you're thirteen, I bet.

And maybe if your rooms have fantastically high ceilings.

I never had black ceilings but I know a neighbor who does. His ceilings are very high and it looks really nice. I would love to do it to ours if I weren't renting.

I was in an oceanside home once that had a lovely all-white, sunny den with a medium wood floor and charcoal-coloured ceiling (and a porthole window--jealous). Unusual, plain, and striking. Helped make the room feel cosy.

we painted our (very high) bedroom ceiling charcoal gray (the walls are kind of sand colored). i love it. was a little scared of doing it, but we went for it and are very happy with the way it turned out.

I really don't like that chadelier thing she's got going on the walls. All the stuff hurts my eyes.

I'm undecided on the black ceiling.

On a totally different note, I love her shoe solution. I don't recall having seen in any any of the prior shoe organization threads. I think that would work perfectly for me and my style of organization. I have to be able to see everything and access it easily-which means able to put it back easily as well.

I recently painted my bedroom ceiling a fairly dark slate blue/gray ... I wasn't sure I'd like it (I've always had white ceilings or worse yet ... popcorn white), but I gave it a shot and I totally love it. I don't think dark ceilings work everywhere, but in this room, which gets a lot of light and which is relatively small, it actually looks very warm and nice.

Incidentally, my ceilings are only 8ft (another reason I was nervous to do it) but since the sq footage is small and my furniture is real low, the dark ceiling wasn't overpowering. It's actually helped me sleep in better too ... usually the early-morning sun hits the ceiling as it's coming up and totally blinds me awake. Even with the drapes closed! But now I don't notice it as much.

Decals? I think this is probably very expensive wallpaper.

I've painted a bathroom ceiling black before and LOVED it. Actually, it's still there. I put a soffit around the room and left it white and painted the "recessed" part in the center black. The effect made the room actually feel taller because the black receded upward. It's a great technique if used properly.

I like the black ceiling.

When I was a kid I spent so much time in my room staring at the ceiling and used to think, "When I grow up and can paint the ceiling, I'm going to paint it black or midnight blue and stick little silver star stickers (like you got on your good school papers) all over it in the configurations of the constellations."

Still getting up the nerve to defy my lease's no painting clause...

I really like the idea of a black/dark colored ceiling. This room, however, is HIDEOUS.

Does anyone know where I can find a black chandelier very similar to the one pictured?

Or like this one

I believe Brocade Home used to sell this one but it is no longer available. :(
