Published in 1981 and currently out of print, the New York Times runs down some great 'sumptuous' interiors belonging to the rich and famous. The book spans a number of different decors, from the kind of 80's we'd all like to forget to surprisingly contemporary (some things like neon accents and florals are coming back into style). Take, for instance, Diane Von Furstenberg's amazing New York office described as a 'cross between an ocean liner and an Esther Williams film'.

How bold a move was it to go with nail polish pink carpets and walls. Incredible and not irrelevant, there are aspects that could work now... in moderation.
Paloma Picasso's Parisian art deco apartment could be an Elle Decor spread, further illustrating that all things old are new again. The light in the apartment, the light pink and blue palette, high ceilings and attention to architectural details. So unabashedly girly, I am lusting after it.

This is the 80's I remember more clearly. A little tackier, a little harder to see as contemporary. But there's no denying that each of these interiors has aspects that are coming back. Obviously today they all have a new twist (like maybe not going so dark with the red satin). But how much does an Atari go for now? How often are we seeing neon in new clothing trends, already being followed by home decor? Take notes everyone, this is the future.

Thanks for these pics! I worked at Bloomingdales' furniture department in NYC from 87-88 and remember those gloriously tacky interiors. Designer Jay Spector had an exclusive Bloomingdales line featuring pieces like this:
