Breaking Up A Bold Color

110909color-01.jpgWe remember quite vividly one long (and labor intensive) weekend when the study of our childhood home received a new coat of paint. The original color turned out to be a very wrong shade of green, so we got put to work re-painting the entire room over the course of two days...

Looking back, we remember kind of liking the retro green color, but it was one shade that the rest of the family couldn't live with. And while we had the time and team support to repaint the entire room, not everyone has those resources so easily available. Instead of spending countless hours (and labor-intensive coats) re-painting every inch, we think a better alternative would be to break up the bold color. You could hang artwork to draw the eye away from the intensity of the walls. Mirrors would also be a great option because of their reflective quality. Introducing hanging or potted plants to a colorful room would also help settle things down a bit and add warmth to the space.

Apartment Therapy readers, how do you break up a bold wall of color in your home?

There's a difference between breaking up a wall of bold color (in which case I agree that art etc work) and trying to break up a wall of color that isn't quite right. If the color is wrong, I think it will never seem right, and for most people, will bug them and make them feel dissatisfied with the room. If after you live with it a couple of days, it still seems wrong, I say repaint (however much of a pain it is), don't try to "break it up" or draw attention away from it.

As an aside, this is another post where using the royal "we" is totally ridiculous.

I love the artwork in the pic. They're such fun characters to look at. Would love to know what those are. :)

Yes, would it be so terrible for the AT bloggers to not pretend they all grew up in the same house?

the art on the wall seems to be old Vanity Fair magazine prints (I am not sure if that VF bears any relation to the current VF). They are charicatures representing significant persons of the time -end of 19th beginning of 20th century. You can get them in many antique print shops, especially in London.
